ビワコオオナマズ、イトウと並ぶ「日本三大怪魚」のひとつで、高知県にはアカメを釣りに多くの釣り人が訪れます。 その一方で宮崎県では、指定希少野生動植物に指定し、捕獲などを原則禁止としています。 暗い場所で光が反射すると目が赤く光るため、「アカメ」と呼ばれています。
