"I remember Amina as a cheerful child," recalls her neighbor, Alhaji Musa. "But over time, she became so quiet, always looking over her shoulder. It was heartbreaking to see."

Tunde's father, an influential businessman, believed in strict discipline, often crossing the line into emotional and psychological abuse. "E ba mi! (Help me!)" Tunde would cry out during his father's rage, but his pleas were met with more harsh words and threats. "Iya Tunde was always worried," shared her friend, Funmi. "She would whisper about Tunde's nightmares and his sudden fear of going to school."

Alhaji Musa, who lives next door to Amina in Kano, shares his sorrow and frustration. “I watched Amina transform from a joyful child to a shadow of her former self. It was painful to see, but there was little I could do without facing backlash from her family. They told me, ‘Ti kekere ko ba ti mọ agbọn, agba kii wo lu,’ which means, ‘If a child does not learn to respect the gourd, an elder would not be able to use it.’ They believed in harsh discipline, not understanding its destructive impact.”

Funmi, a close friend of Tunde's mother in Ibadan, highlights the emotional strain on families dealing with abusive situations. “Iya Tunde was always worried about her son. She would whisper to me about his nightmares and his sudden fear of going to school. It’s heartbreaking to think that someone as innocent as Tunde had to endure such trauma.
