So I was doing just that, resting at a bus stop on one of those rare instances when a bus came by. It was more of an old truck than a bus but then, Cubans are not fussy about the type of transport, as long as it transports. And like all modes of Cuban transportation, it was packed tight with people. As a traveler in Cuba, you quickly learn to change your idea about personal space. I waved it off, explaining that I was not waiting for the bus. El recaudador looked at me and smiled and said, “Vámos” let’s go! I was sitting at a bus stop. This is either a very clever or a very dumb opening for a book about walking. Hopefully, you’ll pick clever and keep reading. So let me explain. Cuba’s bus stops are havens of shade in an otherwise, hot and sunny country and these concrete boxes with benches served many purposes for me on my 64 day solo walk across the Caribbean’s largest island. They were places to sit where the otherwise omnipresent ants would not crawl up my shorts and bite me painfully on the inner thigh. I could prop my backpack up out of the dirt and dig around for a snack. I could stop and write in my journal or just watch the world go by. I have never been to Mount Lawu myself, but I can imagine the beautiful scenery from the top of the mountain. From the height, we can see a breathtaking natural landscape with vast stretches of trees and valleys. In the morning, the sky would appear clear, and we might be able to see white clouds spread across the green valleys. The warm and pleasant sunlight would also reflect on the ground and trees, creating contrasting shadows and giving a dramatic impression to the view.
