Valentine Ozigbo Chairs World UNESCO Philosophy Day at UNIZIK as Peter Obi Receives 'Philosopher Kin

AWKA, Nigeria - The 2023 UNESCO World Philosophy and Alumni Homecoming at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, convened notable intellectuals and leaders on Friday, November 17, 2023, at an event that witnessed the crowning its keynote speaker, Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate and a former Anambra governor, as 'Philosopher King of the Decade'. 

The well-attended conference chaired by Valentine Ozigbo, a respected global CEO, themed 'The Human Of The Future and The Future Of The Human,' delved into the intersections of technology, ethics, and human progress. 

In his chairman's remarks, Mr Ozigbo stressed the crucial role of philosophy in shaping a more understanding and peaceful world. He highlighted the event's theme as pivotal in exploring the complexities of our evolving world and humanity. 

Ozigbo also lauded the university's commitment to philosophical inquiry, critical thinking, and ethical leadership. 

"In closing, I urge us all to embrace the power of philosophical thought to transform our world. Let us be the architects of a future where humanity flourishes in wisdom, peace, and solidarity," he ended his remarks.

Mr Obi, in his keynote speech, emphasised the pressing need for ethical integrity in the face of rapid technological advancements in his insightful address. Drawing from Socrates's wisdom, he highlighted the value of a reflective life, particularly in burgeoning fields like biotechnology and digital equity.

Obi also underscored the ethical quandaries posed by innovations such as BIVAS in Nigeria, which has encountered operational challenges, as symbolic of the broader need for thoughtful and equitable technology implementation.

Adding to the discourse, Prof. Okey Ikechukwu, the conference's main paper presenter, focused on the crucial role of human capital. He advocated for an educational paradigm that marries critical thinking with ethical stewardship, ensuring that technological progress aligns with humane values.

Ozigbo, the immediate past President and Group CEO of Transcorp Plc was also honoured with an award for his outstanding contribution to philanthropy and human capital development. Expressing his gratitude to university leadership for the recognition, he said: 

"This accolade holds immense significance for me, as it is bestowed upon me by my community. Reflecting upon the profound scripture which asserts that a prophet is seldom celebrated in their homeland, this recognition from those closest to me is deeply moving and humbling. I am profoundly grateful for this honour. Thank you."

Prof. Charles Esimone, Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, the Chief Host, and an awardee, lauded the gathering's commitment to intellectual pursuit and societal betterment.

The ceremony's zenith was the conferment of the 'Philosopher King of the Year' award upon Mr Peter Obi in recognition of his profound contributions to philosophical thought and public life. The event also honoured numerous other dignitaries and scholars, including Prof Okey Ikechukwu, Prof Joseph Ikechebelu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Admin); Senator Victor Umeh and Ifeanyi Uba, Joseph Ikechebelu, and a host of others.

Drawing a diverse crowd of dignitaries, which included Prof. Stella Okunna, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Paul University; Rev Fr Prof Obi Oguejiofor; Oseloka Obaze;  Prof Okey Ikechukwu; Rev. Bonachristus Umegbu; Prof Paul Ogugua; Prof Ike Harris Odumegwu; Mr Benjamin Ubah; Gin Henry Mbachu; Hon. Ike Ikedioji Nnewi; Chief Emeka Ugwuoju; Prof Rob Egwuatu; and Prof Maduka Anyakoha; event encapsulated the spirit of inquiry and recognition, marking another milestone in the university's illustrious tradition of fostering dialogue and excellence in the field of philosophy.
