Daenerys was born in Dragonstone after the deaths of her brother Rhaegar and her father the Mad King Aerys Targaryen. Her mother dies giving birth to her and Daenerys fled with her brother Viserys to Essos in order to avoid the assassins Robert had sent. 

The spectator finds Daenerys under the protection of Master Illyrio, who organizes with her brother Viserys the marriage of Daenerys with Khal Drogo (chief of a tribe of 40,000 Dothrakis) and offers her three fossilized dragon eggs. This relationship begins with a rape, but very quickly Daenerys and Drogo fall in love and expect a son. Additionally, Drogo kills Viserys, making Daenerys the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Unfortunately, Drogo is injured as a result of a duel. The wound becomes infected and to save him, Daenerys calls on the witch Mirri Maz Duur who returns him to a vegetative state for revenge.
