日本も含む東アジアの海に生息する魚で、釣りの対象や食用として人気が高いです。 「イサキ」という名前は、磯に棲む事に因んだ「磯魚(イソキ)」、または幼魚の縞模様に因んだ「班魚(イサキ)」に由来するといわれています。 身は白身で、刺身や焼き魚、煮付け、唐揚げ等で食べられています。 旬は初夏です。

九州の有明海に生息するハゼの仲間で、その異様な外見から「エイリアン」と呼ばれる事もあります。 生息域では食用にされ、主に干物にして食べられます。新鮮なものでは刺身や煮付け等で食べられる事もあります。 生命力が強く、活け造りにされても頭部はしばらく生きている事があります。
