Malaysia Flexible Pipe Market Expands with Rising Energy Demand and Continued Offshore Development

Meenakshi

Malaysia’s flexible pipe market is supported by a well-established offshore oil and gas industry, growing subsea activity, and continued investment in energy infrastructure. Flexible pipes are used where projects require corrosion resistance, pressure handling, and easier installation in complex offshore environments. Malaysia has around 12,100 km of upstream pipelines, alongside more than 400 offshore platforms and subsea structures, creating a significant installed base for maintenance and expansion. PETRONAS also aims to sustain national oil and gas production at around 2 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.

Market Drivers Supporting Growth in Malaysia’s Flexible Pipe Industry

Offshore Projects Continue to Support Pipe Demand

Malaysia’s offshore oil and gas sector remains one of the most important drivers of flexible pipe demand. Flexible pipes are commonly used for production risers, export risers, water and chemical injection lines, and gas lift systems, particularly where floating production facilities are involved. PETRONAS planned 69 development wells in 2025, compared with 56 in the previous year, while around 367 facility improvement plans are expected annually over the current activity outlook period. These projects support demand for new piping, replacement systems, connectors, maintenance services, and subsea engineering.

Large Existing Infrastructure Creates Replacement Opportunities

Malaysia already operates a sizeable offshore network, including approximately 12,100 km of pipelines and 3,158 upstream wells. As this infrastructure ages, inspection, repair, replacement, and life-extension activities become more important. Flexible pipe suppliers can benefit from brownfield projects because these systems can often be installed more easily around existing facilities than conventional rigid pipelines.

New Gas Developments Expand the Project Pipeline

Recent projects also strengthen the long-term outlook. PETRONAS’ Bindu gas field, located around 210 km offshore Terengganu, is connected to the Guntong E hub through a 62 km pipeline and is expected to reach peak production of 75 million standard cubic feet per day. Projects like this continue to generate demand for offshore pipeline engineering, installation, maintenance, and related subsea systems.

Government and Industry Initiatives Supporting Malaysia’s Flexible Pipe Sector

Malaysia continues to encourage investment in upstream exploration and resource development through PETRONAS and Malaysia Petroleum Management. The Malaysia Bid Round 2026 offered nine exploration blocks and six discovered resource opportunities, expanding the future project pipeline for offshore development. PETRONAS is also emphasizing technology, local industry capability, cost competitiveness, and energy security through its multi-year activity outlook, supporting opportunities for domestic and international flexible pipe suppliers.

Competitive Insights of Malaysia’s Flexible Pipe Industry

Malaysia’s flexible pipe industry includes international subsea technology companies, domestic oil and gas service providers, EPC contractors, pipe suppliers, and offshore installation specialists. Competition focuses on pressure resistance, fatigue performance, corrosion protection, installation efficiency, certification, and technical support. Suppliers that combine flexible pipe technologies with engineering, installation, inspection, and maintenance services are likely to remain competitive, particularly as operators increasingly focus on extending the life of existing offshore assets.

Challenges Affecting Malaysia’s Flexible Pipe Market

High Technical Requirements Increase Costs

Offshore flexible pipes require advanced materials, multilayer construction, specialized testing, and strict qualification. These requirements can make them more expensive than conventional piping systems and increase project costs.

Demand remains connected to oil and gas project cycles. Changes in commodity prices, project economics, development schedules, or capital expenditure can delay offshore investments and create uneven order volumes for suppliers.

In the years ahead, Malaysia’s flexible pipe market is likely to benefit from a combination of new offshore projects and continued maintenance of its large existing infrastructure base. The opportunity is not limited to greenfield developments; aging pipelines, mature platforms, and brownfield modifications should also generate steady requirements. Malaysia continues to target production of about 2 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. Suppliers offering durable products, strong subsea engineering, reliable installation support, and lifecycle services should remain well positioned.
