As soon as school closed, Yanda imagined what it was going to be like, watching little Yanda and Shoma running towards her as they welcome her from the village bus station. Her little sisters mean the world to her and she eagerly waited to see them every holiday but this time around she is hoping her stay home will be much longer. She cannot wait to take on her new path after completing her grade 12 exams and she is certain her results will earn her a scholarship to Havard University where she hopes to get accepted to pursue her Bachelor’s degree in Musicology. All these dreams drove her into becoming one of the most talented, successful singers the world has ever known. That being said, Yanda studied hard in the hope that she would impress her father who is not for the idea.  

He always says, “study hard my little doctor and make this family proud.” 

These words echo in her head as she sits inside the bus with her head phones on. She weighs her passionate dreams against her father’s wishes for her and wonders if she has a say.  

“Will father listen to me?” she wonders as she stared through the window into the green scenery of Mwano Village, trying to contain her father’s disappointment, almost as if he is already disappointed. 

As she finally decides to not think of it so much for now, she is snapped out of her thoughts by Busiku who pinches her and whispers, “Lwindi’s mother is talking to you.” 

The two have been best friends since childhood and they have pretty much done everything together. Yanda is quiet, thoughtful and calm while Busiku is more outgoing, talkative with a temper. In whatever situation the two find themselves in, they are always there for each other. In this case, Busiku signals Yanda that Lwindi’s mother, who is not in good terms with Mama Yanda is calling her. The two girls know so well that when she calls out to Yanda or initiates conversation that goes beyond greeting, it must be something degrading. 

“How was your exam Mooye (which is to stay young maiden in Tonga)? I have been told you completed,” she says, making everyone else in the bus shift their attention together with the chatty conductor Chipo. 

“Yes, both Busiku and I wrote our grade 12 final exams, Yanda responds making Busiku shift in her seat a little as if saying, “why are you getting me involved?” 

“Wow, such great news! I sure hope you were studying hard wherever you were because it would be a shame for the village headman’s daughter to have to repeat her exams especially with someone of your reputation,” she says and the environment is so quiet that you can hear a pin drop.  

Yanda has the reputation of the smartest girl in their village school and being the village headman just adds on to the recognition. Despite being of a quiet spirit, some people, Mama Lwindi being one of them just won’t be so friendly. 

“I have always studied hard auntie and just as before, my results will speak for themselves’, Yanda responds and shifts her attention to the window as if concluding the matter. 

Mama Lwindi responds with bitter disappointment, “oh well, just make sure you will not have to swallow those words because Lusaka is a big city and young girls nowadays are so intelligent so you cannot possibly outshine them.” 

“I do not think Yanda said anything about disappointment or outshining anyone. Besides, passing does not mean one person alone,” one of the women on the bus respond, making others join in and conversation somehow fades into the current grading system as compared to how things were in the past. 

Chipo cannot take his eyes off such a beautiful girl who is calm intelligent and moral. She is basically perfect in his eyes. Even though he has told Yanda of his interests before, the 17 years old young lady still shows indifference to the idea of dating as she considers herself too young and wants to focus on her dreams. Chipo finished his exams the previous year, failed and is looking to settle down with someone and he is determined to get her even though the odds do not allow. 

Yanda is lost in thought until she realises that amid the ongoing conversation on the bus, Chipo is giving her the flirty look that he always gives her. She looks at him, shrugs it off with disgust and grabs her ear phones, pushing her beautiful afro in a hairband. She wonders how this attention is directed towards her but not her childhood friend Busiku who is now sleeping her shoulder. As they get to the station, little  and Shoma approach them with joy, trying to outrun one another.
