Llamas are domesticated animals native to South America, particularly the Andean regions of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Chile. Known for their calm demeanor and long necks, llamas belong to the camelid family, which also includes alpacas, guanacos, and vicuñas. These gentle creatures have served as pack animals for thousands of years and are cherished for their unique personality and adaptability.

Llamas typically weigh between 250 to 450 pounds and stand about 5.5 to 6 feet tall from the head. They have a thick, soft coat that can come in various colors, including white, brown, black, gray, or a mix of these. Unlike camels, llamas do not have humps, but they do have long legs and padded feet, making them well-suited for rocky mountain terrain.

Their large, expressive eyes and banana-shaped ears give them a friendly appearance. Llamas communicate through body language and a series of soft hums or alarm calls when they sense danger.

Llamas are known for their calm and intelligent nature. They are social animals that prefer to live in herds. When treated well, llamas can be very friendly and even affectionate toward humans. However, they can show signs of irritation by spitting—a behavior often used as a form of communication or defense.
