Oborevwori Advocates Private Sector Involvement in Delta State Sports Development.

The Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Honourable Onoriode Oborevwori, has urged the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and international partners to play a more active role in sports development within Delta State and across Nigeria.

Hon. Oborevwori made this appeal on Friday during the official opening of the Africa for Peace Games Village in Ugolo-Okpe, Okpe Local Government Area.

Represented by Mrs. Samira Evru, Sports Organizing Secretary of Uvwie Council Area, he emphasized the importance of enhanced sports infrastructure and strategic collaborations with private entities to ensure sustainable growth.

"The government cannot achieve this alone. We need the active participation of the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and development partners to build a thriving sports industry," he stated.

Reaffirming the Delta State Government’s commitment under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, Hon. Oborevwori stressed that such partnerships could help "establish a robust sports ecosystem that nurtures athletes and promotes healthy living among Nigerians."

While declaring the Africa for Peace Games Village open, he described the facility as a significant milestone in sports development and peacebuilding across the country.

"This facility is more than just a sports complex; it represents unity, growth, and the transformative power of sports in fostering peace throughout Africa," he remarked.

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of the facility, Comrade Sheriff Mulade—an environmentalist and National Coordinator of the Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice, as well as Chairman of the Delta State Mini Football Association—commended the state government for creating an enabling environment for private sports initiatives to flourish.

"The Games Village is open to the general public and will serve the people of Delta State in the areas of hospitality and sports recreation," Chief Mulade noted.

The opening ceremony featured the grand finale of a five-a-side mini football tournament, where Ughelli United emerged champions, along with a techball demonstration. The event attracted several high-profile dignitaries, including the President of the Nigeria Mini Football Association, Alhaji Datti Umar Yusuf, ex-internationals Victor Ikpeba and Sam Sodje , as well as top government officials.
