Imran Khan, Pakistan's former Prime Minister and celebrated cricket icon, has recently been sentenced to 14 years in prison on corruption charges. His wife, Bushra Bibi, received a seven-year sentence for her involvement in the same case.

The convictions stem from allegations that Khan and his wife accepted land from real estate tycoon Malik Riaz in exchange for laundered money during Khan's tenure as Prime Minister. This laundered money included £190 million returned by British authorities to Pakistan in 2022. Prosecutors argued that Khan allowed Riaz to pay imposed fines with these illicit funds.

The verdict was delivered in Rawalpindi, where Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023. Both Khan and Bushra Bibi were taken into custody following the court's decision. Khan's legal team has announced plans to appeal the verdict, maintaining that the charges are politically motivated. Members of Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have protested, insisting the case is fabricated.

Khan, who was ousted as Prime Minister in April 2022, has faced numerous legal challenges, which he attributes to military and political adversaries. Despite his imprisonment, PTI performed well in the 2024 general elections but did not secure a majority. Observers allege that the sentence is part of a campaign to sideline Khan and PTI before the elections.

Born in 1952, Imran Khan rose to fame as a cricket player, leading Pakistan's national team to a Cricket World Cup victory in 1992. He later entered politics as a critic of government corruption, founding PTI. Initially struggling for 17 years, PTI gained massive support in 2011 from disillusioned young Pakistanis. Khan championed a vision of a corruption-free, prosperous nation.

As of January 2025, Imran Khan remains incarcerated in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. His legal team continues to pursue appeals against his convictions. The political climate in Pakistan remains tense, with Khan's supporters advocating for his release and denouncing the charges as politically driven.
