AUGUST 1 PROTEST, A LOSS OR GAIN MISSION?

As the August 1 date for the proposed mass protest against bad governance, insecurity, inflation, and food price hikes approaches, individuals and groups within and outside the society (our Country, Nigeria) have intensified mobilization.

With only days to go, the planned protest continues to gain significant attention on social media, with plans for it to take place across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Many citizens consider the protest an inalienable right, while others argue it's a ploy by those opposed to the present administration to seize power through subterfuge.

The right to peaceful protest is constitutionally guaranteed under Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution and reinforced by International Human Rights law. 

Therefore, it's essential to reassess the focus of these grievances. Wisdom demands caution, considering the potential repercussions of taking to the streets amidst the current uncertainty in the country. 

The outcome of such actions is increasingly unpredictable, and the risk of escalation is alarmingly high.

As a Conflict Resolution Management Expert and Peace Advocate , I appeal to the promoters of the proposed protest to shelve the event in the interest of peace.

Negotiations and dialogue remain the most civilized way of resolving disputes in sane climes. History has consistently demonstrated that even the most entrenched conflicts can be peacefully resolved through honest engagement.

I'm equally aware of the need, in these turbulent times of uncertainty, to grow calls for peaceful protests, especially from our youths seeking developmental change and unity. 

However, history reminds us of the risks involved when such movements are hijacked by those seeking to sow chaos and discord. The painful memories of the #ENDSARS protests are still fresh in our minds. 

To avoid reliving the devastating experiences of wanton destruction, loss of lives, and chaos, we must recognize that any disruption of law and order will only worsen our already challenging economic situation, further intensifying the suffering endured by our people.

To this end, we must engage in constructive dialogue and seek lasting solutions to the socio-economic issues plaguing the nation.

Also, together, we must unite to protect the peace and stability of our nation, for there is no other land but Nigeria that we can call our own.

On the part of the Government, though they have laid out visible projects and implementation plans to better citizens' lives, they must address the suffering of the people, perpetuating a cycle of underdevelopment and hardship. 

Let me also use this medium, to implore our leaders - political, religious, and traditional - to collaborate effectively with the government and devise a comprehensive blueprint for dialogue that addresses the pressing issues facing our country, ensuring a brighter future for all Nigerians.
