Frequency of Sleep Disturbance and Quality of Life in Premenstrual Syndrome in Women
Chapter 5 - OPERATIONAL DEFINITION(S):
PMS
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a group of symptoms related to the menstrual cycle that can be both physical and psychological. In general, symptoms start during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and end after the cycle concludes(29).
. Sleep Quality Scale
The Sleep Quality Scale (SQS) was carefully created and proven to be an accurate instrument for assessing sleep quality in its entirety. It calculates a global score by evaluating the quality of sleep during the preceding month. The 28 items on the scale are divided into six categories: problems throughout the day, recovery from sleep, trouble falling asleep, trouble waking up, contentment with sleep, and trouble staying asleep. A four-point Likert scale is used to record the responses, with "few" = 0 and "almost always" = 3. Prior to adding up all of the results, the scores for the items in factors 2 and 5 must be inverted. Higher overall scores indicate lower-quality sleep. The score goes from 0 to 84(30).
SF-12 Questionnaire
The SF-12 is a self-reported outcome measure that assesses how an individual's health influences their daily activities. It is commonly used as a life quality metric.
Eight domains are present.
1. Physical activity limitations brought on by medical issues.
2. Social activities limitations brought on by medical or psychological issues
3. Restrictions on routine role activities due to physical health issues
4. Physical discomfort
5. General mental health (well-being and psychological suffering)
6. Restrictions in routine role-playing due to emotional issues
7. Vitality (vigour and exhaustion)
8. Perceptions of general health
The Physical Component Summary (PCS) and the Mental Component Summary (MCS) are the two summary measures that result from the scoring. • To interpret PCS and MCS results, use the norm-based scoring system, which has a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10 for the general population. A score of 50 or above indicates above-average health-related quality of life, whereas a score of 50 or lower indicates below-average health(31).
PMSQ
To screen for premenstrual symptoms for most cycles in the previous year, the Chinese Premenstrual Symptoms Questionnaire (PMSQ) is a self-rated assessment. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) criteria for PMDD syndrome are reflected in the PMSQ (Cronbach's a Z 0.76), which is an 11-item symptom checklist divided into two categories: primary symptoms (four questions) and additional symptoms (seven items)(32).
