The Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games (NOGIG) once again captivated spectators and dignitaries alike as it unfolded in a week-long extravaganza of athleticism and camaraderie at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. Despite initial delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 19th edition of NOGIG surpassed expectations, showcasing the resilience and competitive spirit of the oil and gas industry.

Thirteen prominent companies, represented by a total of one thousand, five hundred athletes, engaged in spirited competition across various disciplines, demonstrating their commitment to sportsmanship and excellence. Among them, Team NNPC emerged as the undisputed champions, clinching an impressive haul of 50 medals, including 20 gold, nine silver, and 21 bronze. NLNG secured the second position with 14 gold, 13 silver, and 11 bronze medals, while Shell claimed the third spot with seven gold, six silver, and nine bronze medals.

Dr. Ifeanyiwa Mojo-Eyes, the Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), expressed her elation at the outstanding performance of the event, emphasizing that it marked a significant milestone for NOGIG. Notably, she herself participated in golf, demonstrating her dedication to both organizational duties and active engagement in sports.

In her welcome address, Dr. Mojo-Eyes underscored the theme of the event, "Empower Wellness, Ignite Productivity," highlighting the importance of promoting physical fitness and fostering connections within the industry. She urged all participants to uphold the legacy of NOGIG and elevate it to new heights of excellence.

The sporting achievements were not limited to the overall winners. Coach Emeji Sunday, known affectionately as "Naked Wire," led his volleyball team to victory, securing a gold medal against formidable opponents from Shell. Additionally, individual athletes like Oluwadamilola Adisa excelled in squash, while Apakama Chioma showcased remarkable skills in swimming, contributing to their respective teams' successes.

Remarkably, Dr. Mojo-Eyes herself has a history of sporting prowess, having previously won gold in pole-ball games and actively competed in volleyball, badminton, and golf. Her dedication to promoting female participation in sports is commendable, setting an inspiring example for others to follow.

Despite a narrow loss in the football semi-finals in Port-Harcourt, Team NNPC demonstrated resilience and sportsmanship, ultimately securing a bronze medal during the colorful closing ceremony. The event's historical significance was further underscored by displays of Nigeria's rich cultural heritage, including traditional attire and dance performances.

Dignitaries such as former House of Representatives Speaker Honorable Yakubu Dogara, former Plateau State Governor Honorable Simon Lalong, and Sport Minister Fidel Pelpole graced the event, alongside other esteemed leaders from the oil and gas industry sector. Their presence reflected the importance of NOGIG as a platform for fostering camaraderie and promoting healthy competition within the industry.

In conclusion, NOGIG 2024 was a resounding success, showcasing the exceptional talent and competitive spirit within the Nigerian oil and gas industry. As athletes and spectators alike depart with cherished memories, the legacy of NOGIG continues to inspire future generations to embrace the values of sportsmanship, wellness, and productivity.
