The Ark of the Covenant is a gold-plated wooden chest that, according to the Hebrew Bible, contained the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, a pot of manna, and Aaron's rod. It was a sacred object of the Israelites, and was kept in the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle and the Temple of Jerusalem.

The Ark was described in the Book of Exodus as being made of acacia wood, 2.5 cubits long, 1.5 cubits wide, and 1.5 cubits high. It was overlaid with gold inside and out, and had a gold molding around it. The lid of the Ark was called the Mercy Seat, and it was made of solid gold. Two cherubim, with their wings spread out, were carved on the Mercy Seat, looking down at each other.

The Ark was carried by the Levites on poles, and was only allowed to be touched by the high priest. It was a symbol of the presence of God among the Israelites, and was used to atone for their sins.

The Ark of the Covenant was lost after the Babylonians destroyed the Temple of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Its current whereabouts are unknown, but there are many legends and myths about where it might be. Some believe that it is hidden in Ethiopia, while others believe that it was destroyed.
