भारतीय पूर्ण जागरण के अग्रदूत और समाज सुधार आंदोलनों के प्रवर्तक राजा राममोहन राय माने जाते हैं इनका जन्म 22 मई 1772 ईस्वी को बंगाल के हुगली जिले में राधानगर नामक गांव में एक संभ्रांत परिवार में हुआ था। यह बचपन से ही मेधावी थे। इन अरबी, फारसी ,संस्कृत, रेंज ,ग्रीक ,लैट्रिन हिब्रू आदि भाषाओं का अच्छा ज्ञान था। अपने आरंभिक जीवन में इन्होंने ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी में नौकरी की लेकिन कुछ समय बाद नौकरी छोड़कर अपना सारा समय समाज सुधार मे लगाया।
