  「好きこそものの上手なれ」と言う。塾生の子たちを見ていると様々なタイプの子がいる。一人として同じ子はいないから当たり前のことだ。「モテたいから勉強している」「親の期待に応えたいから勉強している」「数学が大好きだから勉強している」。勉強する理由はいろいろある。

　しかし、成績がどんどん向上していくのは「好き」だから勉強している生徒だけ。無理やりやらされている生徒は学年が上がるにつれて好きだから勉強している子に敗北してゆく。これもまた当然と言える現象だ。

　旧帝や国立大学医学部に合格していく生徒を多く指導させてもらっているが、トップクラスの生徒は「当たり前」のことをやっている。数学ならチャート、英語なら過去問。多くの敗北していく生徒は「〇〇参考書がいいぞ」「〇〇予備校がいい」と外部に目を向けすぎる。

　大切なのは自分を変えることなのだが、それが出来るのは上位の１割以下のようだ。

 　They say, "What one likes, one will do well. When I look at my students, I see many different types of students. It is natural that no two students are alike. They study because they want to be popular, because they want to meet their parents' expectations, because they love mathematics, and so on. There are many reasons for studying.

　However, only students who study because they "love it" will see their grades improve rapidly. Students who are forced to study lose out to those who study because they love it as they move up through the grades. This is also a natural phenomenon.

　I have had the privilege of teaching many students who have passed the entrance exams to the medical schools of the former imperial and national universities, and the top students are doing what is "natural. For example, they use charts for math and past exam questions for English. Many students who lose out look too much to outside sources, saying, "00 reference books are good," or "00 prep schools are good.

　What is important is to change oneself, but it seems that less than 10% of the top students are able to do so.
