Every year a transformation occurs in the broadleaf forests of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. It is known as the changing of the colors, and it is one of natures most breathtaking spectacles. Going back as far as colonial times, locals would ride their carriages or wagons into the countryside and often picnic or camp out just to witness this spectacle, many spending the weekend in communion with nature. By the late 19th century, railroads began to offer special excursions that brought visitors from even greater distances. Country inns that used to cater to spring and summer visitors from the cities began to remain open past the Labor/Labour Day weekend to accommodate those who were now coming to enjoy the fall foliage. Visitors were dubbed "leaf peepers" by locals and this term is still widely used today. The idea of fall cruising the St. Lawrence River, around
