Astronomy.

If you have a passion for star gazing, telescopes, the Hubble and the universe and this thing we call “astronomy”, you are far from alone. Of course, we know that astronomy is a highly respected science that has produced some of the most amazing accomplishments of the twentieth century. On top of that, it is a thriving area of fascination and one of the most exciting hobby areas going with thousands of astronomy clubs and tens of thousands of amateur astronomers watching the stars every night ju

NASA’s James Webb telescope gets hit by a micrometeroid...

Astronomers everywhere have high hopes for NASA's James Webb telescope. It's supposed to give us an insight into the first stars and galaxies that ever formed and into the atmospheres of potentially habitable exoplanets. That is why NASA and its partners had engineered it to be able to withstand harsh situations, such as being bombarded by micrometeroids flying at extremely high velocities. Between May 23rd and May 25th, a micrometeoroid that's larger than expected hit one of the telescope's pri

Major African radio telescope will help to image black holes

The Africa Millimetre Telescope will fill a gap in the coverage of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a global network of telescopes that can receive and analyse radio waves of around 1 millimetre in length — in 2019 they published the first-ever image of a black hole’s edge, known as its event horizon The telescope will be located on or near Table Mountain in the Gamsberg Nature Reserve in Namibia. The project, confirmed at the end of last year, is “another step toward solidifying Africa’s position as a globally competitive and capable player in the field of astronomy”, says Charles Takalana, head of the secretariat at the African Astronomical Society in Cape Town, South Africa. The telescope will “fill a missing observing window on the continent” and will be crucial for Africa’s astrophysics communities, adds Roger Deane, who directs the Wits Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
