NASA, USGS Map Minerals to Understand Earth Makeup, Climate Change

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) will map portions of the southwest United States for critical minerals using advanced airborne imaging. Hyperspectral data from hundreds of wavelengths of reflected light can provide new information about Earth's surface and atmosphere to help scientists understand Earth's geology and biology, as well as the effects of climate change. The research project, called the Geological Earth Mapping Experiment (GEMx), will use NASA's Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and Hyperspectral Thermal Emission Spectrometer (HyTES) instruments flown on NASA's ER-2 and Gulfstream V aircraft to collect the measurements over the country's arid and semi-arid regions, including parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. "This exciting new project is just one example of the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to a clean energy future," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. "NASA

Climate change and the health of the world

Climate change is having a major negative impact on our environment. Carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels are contributing to rising temperatures and severe weather patterns. Ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, ocean acidity is increasing, and extreme weather is becoming more frequent. As a result, animals are losing their habitats, ecosystems are being destroyed, and species are becoming extinct. To address this critical issue, we must act swiftly to reduce carbon emissions, swit

New method to synchronize devices on Earth makes use of cosmic rays

Various technologies, networks and institutions benefit from or require accurate time keeping to synchronize their activities. Current ways of synchronizing time have some drawbacks that a new proposed method seeks to address. The cosmic time synchronizer works by synchronizing devices around cosmic ray events detected by those devices. This could bring accurate timing abilities to remote sensing stations, or even underwater, places that other methods cannot serve. Early tests show promise, but the real challenge may lie in the adoption of this new technique.

Global warming a threat to earth

Global warming, also known as climate change, is a rapidly growing problem that poses a significant threat to our planet. The Earth's average surface temperature has been steadily increasing over the past century, primarily due to human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. One of the most notable effects of global warming is the rising sea levels. As the Earth's temperature increases, so does the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere. This water vapor then falls as

Great Kingdom

The baying of dogs woke me up my first morning in Bhutan.Otherwise, the main town square outside my room was empty, and silent.A huge full moon sat atop the golden mountains in a sky already blue.To the west, strips of mist snaked in and out of the hills as if to heighten an air of unreality.

Discovering Venus: Earth's Mysterious Twin

Venus, the second planet from the Sun, is often called Earth’s “sister planet” due to its similar size, mass, and composition. However, beneath these surface similarities lies a world drastically different from our own. With scorching temperatures, a dense carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere, and crushing surface pressure, Venus presents one of the most extreme environments in the solar system. Yet, its unique features make it a key object of interest for astronomers and planetary scientists. Physica

Venus: Earth's Not-So-Twin Planet Venus, our closest planetary neighbor, has often been called Earth's twin due to its similar size and mass. But beneath the thick veil of clouds that shroud the planet lies a world far stranger and more hostile than anything found on Earth. Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system, with surface temperatures hot enough to melt lead. This scorching heat is caused by a runaway greenhouse effect. The atmosphere of Venus is crushing, 96% carbon dioxide, trappi
