Gained Her independence on October 1st, 1960 and in 1963 adopted a republican constitution but elected to stay a member of the commonwealth. Ethnic altercation in Nigeria led to military coups which claimed life of innocent individuals. Nigeria Armed Forces held power in Nigeria from 1966 to 1999 before adopting civilian rule.
