Review: James Baldwin's "Another Country" is a brilliant, unflinching, remarkable novel. It is often said "That one should not judge others, until you have walked in their shoes." Never has such a statement been so vividly brought to life than in this book. Mr. Baldwin makes the reader feel exactly what it is like to be an outsider... A black person, a homosexual, a female... In a white man's world.I have often compared Mr. Baldwin's books to Martin Scorsese' movies. They both reveal a realism that is frightening and can only be achieved by artists extremely familiar with the material. The characters are complex, sexually, morally, racially, and yet they are as real as any characters you could ever hope to encounter. The writing is sublime and the structure and narrative are the work of a true craftsman and master.I cannot recommend this book enough. This is great literature and it is as relevant today as it was when published in 1961.

Review: A book that needs to reappraised today when we need it more than ever, James Bawldwin's Another Country is one of the most honest books I'll ever read. Set in Greenwich Village, Another Country blows the lid off the "pretty, wholesome, good ole America" image of the 1950s with total abandon and disregard. All the main characters-- Rufus, Vivaldo, Cass, Ida, Eric-- are angry, either outwardly, silently, or, sometimes, both. The problem alies when they can't quite figure out what makes them so resentful and bitter and, ultimately, hopeless, helpless. Whether it's Rufus's black rage destroying his life slowly but surely or Cass realizing the truth about women who tell themselves they want the "white picket fence" Haven of marriage and children, or proud, liberal Vivaldo coming to grips with the fact that loving black people is not the same as understanding them; or Eric battling his self hatred over his homosexuality, the characters searching for and discovering these truths are on a road paved with broken glass and flowers, as revelations can be as beautiful as they are ugly. The characters themselves are made of glass and flowers, too, as they can be as thoughtful, just, and kind as they can be willfully ignorant, selfish, and plain mean.Again, it's the honesty of it all, perfectly crafted by James, that makes the story as compelling and prescient and rough and complicated and uplifting as it is. I need to spread James Bawldwin's masterful sensitive words and prose to as many people as possible.

Review: Love Baldwin's writing style because he opens your mind to different perspectives.Another Country seeks to bring understanding to those who are often most misunderstood. Gay men, black women and adulterous wives, those societies tend to hate the most, the people who are often only understood by one another. I would recommend the book for open minds; it is a passionate novel that vocalizes the agony of being different.

Review: this novel diffuses baldwn's discussion on race through the friendships and connnections a small group of new yorkers make in the states and europe. the interactions are alternately sensual, violent and tragic but all are powerful and continue to haunt the reader long after the last page is turned. baldwin joins his views on race with exposing sexuality among the young for a charged and passionate reading experience. i loved this book when i read it the first time; it was the book that prepared me for reading baldwin's essays on race. it also serves as a companion to viewing 'i am not your negro'.

Title: Disappointing
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2020
Review: I was very curious to read the author's book as I was very much impressed by his filmed interviews and debates on the racial discrimination. But as much as I expected and wanted to like this book, I ended up quiting reading after a bit less than the first 200 pages. And even this didn't come without a struggle as I wanted to finish this book and didn't want to admit to myself that it was merely boring. The theme develops very slowly with not much happening and the dialogues are mostly dull and anything but intriguing. There were some interesting parts in the first section but they were followed by so much pointless text that I had to force myself to keep reading until the point I said to myself enough is enough. This is very pity because I envisioned myself reading many of the author's books as the racial cause is very dear to my heart. But with this experience I'm afraid that my acquaintance with James Baldwin's literature is not expected to develop any further.
