It should first of all be understood that every computer is incapable of doing anything unless it is controlled by software. A programmer has to write software to guide the computer hardware in simple steps in order to carry out a task. The computer is very good at following such simple instructions; it can carry out such instructions very fast and accurately, and can do so repeatedly. What I mean here is that the computer hardware is a hard worker that must be supervised by software to accomplish any task.

So computer programming is about defining simple and clear instructions for the computer, and these instructions are collectively called software or a program.
