Title: Perfectly beautiful men in a range of photographic styles

Review: This is a very good collection of male nude photography with a very large number of photographers represented. This broad representation means that the images have a large scope of themes and impressions. Tom Bianchi approaches the male as if the body is a monument, massive and yet moving. Tony Butcher's photographs of black men shows a broad range of themes where he explores both context and structure. Frank Celaya has an eye for the perfect California white boy. Michael Childers has a sense of the narrative and drama with a photo of a Narcissus like nude joined by a wolf. John Falocco captures the nude in a stretch. Franz Fleissner explores multiple themes including romantic muted images to slick porno star professional. Ed Freeman photographs a male couple embracing and is able to capture that together they make a whole, alone they are only a part of a couple. Mark Grantham captures the odd pose, such as two nude men doing something that looks like dancing or wrestling. Kobi Israel captures a beautiful Cuban nude, contemplating himself in a mirror in an interior that is 1950s Latin Caribbean. Louis LaSalle has a sense of drama as he pairs extremely handsome men with natural settings of moss and ferns and sapling groves. Michele Martinoli has a wonderful study of two male heads. Reed Massengill is the most over the top photographer in the collection with his combination of almost pornographic poses in frilly 18th century settings. Ross Pierce explores the class academic study of a nude male in the classic pose of the figure drawing class. However the overwhelming handsome model and the muted color range make this photograph a unique re-interpretation on an old theme. Chris Reynolds photographs loves in bed through a wall mirror, giving the work a voyeuristic sensation. Of course the excellent work of James Spada is included and integrated into the collection. Norberto Torriente has a sense of darkness that he peppers in his photographs. His overly defined nude against an overly defined print on a Victoria sofa is oddly beautiful. David Vance, possibly the most well known of the photographers in the collection explores his mythological and archetypal themes with a soft focus nude on horseback midstream. Brett Wexler has the most startling photograph in the collection with a young man whose pose, eye contact, and erection are confrontive and overwhelmingly sexy. Dimitirs Teros the Greek photographer is a master of finding young Greek men of perfect proportion and demonstrating that proportion with perfect play of darks and lights. The collection is excellent. The photographers represent a broad range of approaches that is highly entertaining.

Review: The Romantic Male Nude is pretty much what the name implies, with about 200 photographs from 41 different photographers of men in various poses. Other than the brief forwards at the beginning of the book and the photographer credits at the end, there is little other writing, and the book stands purely on the beautiful images contained within.

The photos are broken into several main categories - 'youthful yearning', 'romantic men', 'al fresco', etc, although the editors have done a great job in putting together a collection that remains consistent throughout. The photos explore the romanticized male form, and so rather than capturing the erotic, the men are mostly posed in a fashion that shows off their bodies without delving into the tacky. There is a quiet innocence to these men, with a slight air of sadness about them, and the overall mood of the collection is much more powerful that similar books.

The subjects tend to be well-built and muscular, and I'd guess most of them are in the 22-30 age group. This is a nice departure from the overly-thin twinks that are often photographed in books like this. If I had to put these guys into a category, I'd say they could live in the Abercrombie & Fitch universe, but they'd probably hang out with a smarter and less annoying crowd than the dumb boys in the advertisements.

Because this collection runs to the artistic more than the erotic, the photos tend to emphasize muscles and builds in poses similar to Michelangelo's 'David', and the allure of 200 hundred 'Davids' assembled together is powerful. The pictures are about 70% black and white and 30% color, and the large format of the book is nice since most photos are 8x6 or 8x8, with a few larger spreads.

The collection does not shy away from full-frontal nudity either, which sets it apart. Around half the photos capture the full frontal male form, although being about romance more than sex, only one or two images portray men in an aroused state. About 80% of the photos are of single subjects, with the remaining being of two men together. Of those, most portray the men hugging or embracing, and most duo shots do not show full frontal nudity.

Overall, this is a beautiful collection of sexy men. It's not designed to be eroticism, but it is arousing. For those who enjoy artistic nudes and the romanticized ideal male form, this is a great addition to any collection.
