Title: I prefer clean stories
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2019
Review: The premise was good. The writing was ho-hum. Every time I came back I had to remind myself of what I was reading, who the characters were and what went on before my break. That was fine. It was interesting enough to plod on. But then it slid into a downward spiral. Descriptions of adolescent girls in compromising situations and glorified immorality is not my idea of a fun read. So chalk this one up to a loss. I won't finish it. I made a promise not to read books that titillate. Good books don't need it.

Title: BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2019
Review: This is the story of Beth, Sally & Carol who met in boarding school. When they were 14, something awful happened to Carol. The 3 of them covered it up & they promised never to tell anyone. Ever. Soon after her 18th birthday, Carol left school and distanced herself from Beth & Sally.
Beth wishes she could undo the bad thing & do the right thing instead. Maybe, their lives could have been completely different if she had. She keeps it all bottled up. She longs to be rid of the guilt & the shame.
Sally & Beth remain close but they never hear from Carol. The last time the 3 of them were together was for Beth's 30th birthday. Beth is about to celebrate her 40th birthday. They haven't seen Carol in nearly a decade. It appears as if Carol does not want to be found.
It's important that they find her. They learn that the school they attended is closing & the site is being sold for redevelopment. Their secret could be discovered, when they start digging. Beth tried every trick in the book to track Carol down, but she has hit a brick wall. So, she hires a private investigator. He can't afford not to take the case but he knows they aren't telling him the whole story. There's something they're not telling him about Carol. Is she unstable? Is she dangerous?

Title: A bit of a thriller but sad too
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2019
Review: Teresa Driscoll is a talented storyteller. The Promise kept me glued because I wanted to know the story behind the story of three girls aged 14, making a promise to take the truth to the grave. Certainly, some of the tale was a psychological thriller, but for me, the story was more of a sad tale about what happens when you keep secrets and attempt to cover up the truth.
I remember being involved once with someone who asked me what I was most ashamed of. In truth, I had to think long and hard about his question and when I answered that nothing sprang to mind immediately, I registered the disappointment on his face. What I realised afterward was that he wasnβt disappointed I didnβt have any shameful secrets hidden but rather that he did. And this is the central theme of The Promise.
Carol, Beth, and Sally attend a Catholic boarding school, share a dorm room and bond tightly. An incident involving all three girls sees them promising not to speak or reveal what has taken place. For thirty years Sally and Beth attempt to put the trauma behind them, even though Carol, the third girl, has distanced herself from her former friends. Notification that the convent they attended is to be torn down and redeveloped forces them to face what they did, which prompts the hiring of a private investigator, Matthew, as they donβt want their buried secret discovered.
The intrigue in this story is having the readerβs mind guess at what terrible act the girls performed and attempted to cover-up and who is spooking them now. The revelation when it comes turned this from a psychological thriller to a sad story for me. The real tragedy of the theme is just how damaging holding on to secrets is to oneβs psyche and the debilitating effects it can have for years down the line.

Title: Complex Read
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2019
Review: This is my first book by Teresa Driscoll. I will be reading more by this author. Sally, Carol and Beth are childhood friends at a boarding school. They are very close, but lose contact their senior year following an unnamed tragedy and promise to keep it secret. Years later, the announcement that the school is being sold leads Sally and Beth to search for Carol, in order to renew contact. They are scared that their secret will come out as a result of the schools ending. Carol seems not to want to be found, and they hire a private investigator to locate her. They find her, and she seemingly wants no parts of reconnecting. The action of contacting her seems to open a Pandora's box. The women are seriously threatened. But once open the box cannot be closed, and the book winds towards its conclusion. As questions mount, we learn more about the burden the three carried for years. No spoilers here -- it's a good read that is complex without hitting you over the head. Recommend this one.

Title: Gripping, heart-wrenching thriller
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 4, 2021
Review: This is a page-turner. A story about how decades old childhood guilt can mold the perceptions into adulthood and itβs long reaching consequences. The author did an excellent job of timing the past events with the future in her storytelling. Highly recommend.

Title: Wow!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2019
Review: Total wow of a book! Every time I thought I had it figured out, something else happened. The central mystery could have been quite stereotypical, but became much more in the hands of this talented author. I also was not fond of the central character, but grew to care about and appreciate her as the story went on. Even the times that I guessed what might happen still stopped me in my tracks when the full picture was uncovered. I seriously had to stop and catch my breath at the end.
