Review: I cried multiple times reading this book. Little Dog Monday, the Pied Piper, the unseen army of fallen soldiers all just gutted me. But it WAS SO GOOD. Vivid characters and scenes just whisks you straight through the book lickity split. L.M. Montgomery at her very best. And Rilla’s romance was so sweet and poignant. Highly recommend.

Review: Classics are called such for a reason, and "Rilla of Ingleside" is as classic as you can get. I have read it many times, and each one only makes me love it more. I grew up reading about Anne Shirley and her exploits, and this final novel in the "Anne of Green Gables" series spotlights Anne's daughter Rilla and her coming of age years.

Rilla is 14 when the book opens, and her mother is a little worried about Rilla's lack of ambition in life, noting from the first chapter that "She has no serious ideals at all - her sole aspiration seems to be to have a good time." There's no doubt that Rilla's a touch vain and perhaps a mite spoiled, but she is girl who goes through an incredible overhaul of character through these pages.

I've read a great many books and sampled the writing of many different authors through the years, but there is something spellbinding about Lucy Maud Montgomery's way of storytelling. You feel the characters. Their joys, sorrows, struggles, and triumphs become your own. Your imagination is stirred with the slightest turns of phrase. Montgomery is a true master. Her characters will live in the hearts of readers until the end of time.

The first real grown-up party Rilla is allowed to attend happens to be on August 4, 1914. The party is interrupted when the news breaks that England has declared war on Germany, and as a part of the British Empire at that time, Canadian lads would be called upon to go forth and fight. As Rilla watches her brothers and friends go war and becomes part of the war effort on the home front herself, the seriousness and sacrifice of wartime life affect Rilla deeply. She finds the strength to rise to the occasion, even in things she despises. It's the joy of seeing Rilla grow into a woman whose inner loveliness matches her outer beauty that makes me love her so. Rilla is a true heroine.

This book is also valuable for the insight it provides into World War I and the lives of the everyday people it impacted. As a history lover, this adds to my enjoyment of the novel. But it's Rilla herself who brings me back time and again, to laugh and cry and hope (and cry some more!) with her and all the Blythe gang through this incredibly journey.

Review: Learned tomes have been written on the life and works of LM Montgomery and an entire Canadian Province derives pride and income from this Minister's wife.

By today's standards Rilla of Ingleside is a carefully worded narrative about a teenaged girl (the daughter of Anne of Green Gables) whose life is changed by the First World War. A cluster of characters introduced through the Anne series are at the centre of this novel - including Susan the spinster housekeeper, a pivot in the tale.

The book is high romance, switching from fraught moments of love, to the deep pains of war based on the news from brothers, friends and sons at the front. Good sturdy colonial chaps noble and unstinting in their wholesome commitment to God, King and country but props in this book. But through it all Rilla matures into a warm young woman raising a war orphan, learning to cook and sew (yes, it is a sort of domestic science course). Dog Monday the faithful mutt remains steadfast at the railway station waiting for his master. And in the end the love of her life, Lt Ken Ford returns to claim her and her lisp!

The book is a sweet tale of a girl growing up, romantic but with all sexuality tied down in the cleansing prose. Written with humour, nice observation and sweet goodness, imbued with values barely viable in this day and age. I guess a girl would need to be under ten to enjoy this purity and naivity these days. But the Anne series are still a must read in the literature of the young, and yes the old.

Review: Rilla of Ingleside is a coming-of-age novel written in 1921 by L.M. Montgomery that focuses on the youngest daughter of the beloved Anne Shirley, now Mrs. Blythe from the “Anne of Green Gables” series. Rilla spends her teenage years dealing with the stresses of living during the Great War, having her three brothers and her sweetheart volunteer to go to the war front to bringing up an orphaned war baby, Jims. The novel shows many examples of what life was like during the war and various aspects of societal pressures that became the norm during this time. For instance, the pressure put on the young men to enlist in the war and the roles that the women should fall in to help with the war effort were accepted by society so wholeheartedly that individuals, such as Rilla’s brother Walter, who did not conform to these new societal norms, found themselves the subject of ridicule, scorn, and contempt. The men of military age who do not enlist in the military are viewed as cowards and are shamed. The women are expected to join the cause by engaging in activities such as making bandages for the Red Cross and sending care packages to the soldiers overseas. They are also expected to live as frugally as possible, with no extravagant or selfish expenditures. The protagonist of the novel, Rilla, undergoes a major transformation from an always laughing, carefree girl to a strong, responsible woman over the course of the Great War.
