Title: Overpowering

Review: I had never heard of Lispector before stumbling, by chance, across a review of a biography of her in the NYT Book Review section. The name of the biography is "Why this World?." My sense of it was that I would have to read this author. I chose, as a beginning, the last book she had written, "The Hour of the Star." It was overpowering.

Was it a novel? Hard to say. It seems to use the medium of a quasi-novel to engage painful truths which most of us ignore. Lispector, ultimately, is writing to, for, about, and against God. She is merciless in her exposition. Even God is seeking shelter from her pen.

It is a short work. It can be handled in one sitting if you have the emotional strength to do so.

This book was readily available. Her other productions, at least the ones I have been attempting to get my hands on, are very hard to obtain. I hope the biography which I menitoned above leads to re-issuings of her work. By the way I am now reading, in lieu of Lispector herself, that "Why this World?" It is very well written and immensely informative.

Review: While I doubt that very many others would like this book, I found it extraordinary in various ways. Though I'm an older person and have read a fair amount for 50 years, I only learned of this author recently through Harpers magazine. Their description of her writing interested me and I bought 3 of her books in a month. Hard to describe, but from my perspective I'd call the works of hers I've read as perhaps "intensely self-reflective", concerned with the meaning of words, literature. Others have referred to her as "mystic", which makes sense to me if you consider Franz Kafka a sort of "mystic", which I guess I do. This would be though the opposite of "religious" in most cases. In reading Lispector I found myself thinking about statements, or at least my interpretations, of some Zen Buddhism, not the current popularized "Zennish" stuff, but things in Alan Watts, Suzuki,Faure.

Title: Not enough "bang" for my buck

Review: This short novel started off ok, but it was not long before my brain was awash in confusion. This is a highly abstract experimental novel that makes little if any sense. Without question the author has a wonderful vocabulary and on occasion really knows how to turn a phrase, but she doesn't seem to know how to put her natural talents to their best use.
The reader never gets to know the characters (and quite frankly doesn't want to get to know them) because they are so flat--less than flat. Furthermore, the narrator does anything but narrate the story because he is always too busy calling attention to himself and the fact that he is narrating a story that no one gives a s**t about. There is no plot and the overall idea is as hopeless as they come--TRULY HOPELESS.
I really wanted to like this work and I pushed on, almost against my will to finish, but all I was left with was a disappointment that bordered on downright despair. For such a slim book, this may have been one of the most cumbersome ordeals I have put myself through as of late.
Simply put, there are millions of better things out there to read and I should probably note that this is the only book I have ever awarded a one star rating--this is because zero stars is not an option.

Title: Fabulous Brazilian Author

Review: A wonderful Brazilian writer, now being translated in English. What an opportunity to expand into a new latin American authorship. This is her last effort before passing and having read it I want to read more. Her exploration of the life of an unfortunate soul living on the margins in Rio is revealing and moving.

Asks a lot of the reader though as it questions the purpose and act of writing itself along with questions about the very meaning of life and its attendant responsibilities. It is, in many ways, as the narrator expresses a wish for it to be, ' a punch in the stomach'...

Title: Who Needs Lispector if You've Got James Joyce?

Review: Looking back to my Undergraduate days, I'm seeing that Ms. Lispector would have been the perfect author to scramble perfectly more than a few brains. But at that dim point in time we had Joyce and Kafka to do the job. The one good thing: it made of me a fan of Cain, Chandler, per Wahloo and so many others that still occupy places in my "library' long after the great ones have been recycled.
