Review: So I've been sitting with this book for a month now and I have so say I'm pretty disappointed with its contents. The "reharms" in here are hardly reharms at all. It's mostly a few tritone subs of V chords, some ii-V's simplified to just ii's or V's or vice versa, and occasionally a diatonic passing chord. It mostly reads like a set of charts to tunes where someone tried to transcribe the original changes but didn't have a strong enough ear to get them right (which is obviously not true for the author, Mr. Gassel, who is a superb musician).That said, there are a few moments here and there that have some pretty great ideas. "All the Things You Are" has a really cool reharm to the last A section, for example, but these examples are pretty rare in the book. I was hoping for this sort of things in all the songs, but that really isn't the case. On the other end of the spectrum, a song like "Falling Grace," which originally has really hip changes, is mostly unchanged other than the opening four bars simplified to a really bland Abmaj7 to Gm7. It just sounds so weak in comparison to the orignal changes.I may be a bit spoiled as I've grown up in Northeast Ohio where we have a hidden gem in guitarist Bob Fraser who has quite a reputation for creative and refreshing reharms to tunes. Check out his tune "High Hopes" in the original Real Book Volume 3 (not the Hal Leonard version) for a sense of his harmonic thinking. I was expecting all of the songs in this book to be reframed with refreshing twists on the stock changes but instead it's mostly a volume of watered down changes or really obvious subs. For those rare gems interspersed throughout the book, I'll definitely be making note of them while wishing there were a lot more like them in the rest of the book.

Review: This is a fantastic book of reharmonizations from a true jazz genius. I have had the pleasure of taking multiple Skype lessons from Mr Grassel over the years (which I strongly recommend). He is an absolutely fantastic teacher with a knack for explaining complicated principles in a very simple and understandable way. Several years ago, he taught me more about how to reharmonize jazz tunes in a couple of 90-minute Skype lessons than I had ever learned from any other teacher over the prior 30 or 35 years. Not surprisingly, I was eagerly awaiting the release of this book and it does not disappoint! With a work of this scope and magnitude, I have only scratched the surface with these tunes so far. However, I can say that the tunes range from relatively subtle reharmonizations all the way to radical overhauls that are very modern sounding. More importantly, this book has so much material that it can serve as a lifetime of study in how to create your own reharmonizations. Although this book is absolutely wonderful on its own, I would also strongly recommend taking a couple of Skype lessons with Mr. Grassel on the topic of reharmonization. You will obtain a very clear understanding of the numerous devices for reharmonization that he uses in this book. Five stars plus!!!!

Review: There are two official Real books with chord variations. This one - "Reharmonized" and another one called "Enhanced Chords." I have both and I like this one quite a lot. The chords are reharmonized enough to make it more interesting to play but not so much that they don't resemble the originals. If you prefer much greater change then you might like the enhanced version more. Perhaps it is also related to how advanced one is. I think for a beginner or intermediate jazz player this is more approachable. This is especially true if you are not very familiar with all the tunes. However if you've played the Real Book tunes so many times you could play them in your sleep it might be more fun to tackle the enhanced chords.

Review: As a study in application of reharmonization strategies, this could be interesting. The Real Book title is inappropriate though. Real Books are for when someone calls a tune you don't know, and secondarily as a way to learn tunes (most contemporary educators recommend transcribing a recording you like over relying on the rushed approximations of some Berklee students from the 70s). Jack Grassel is a great player, but I doubt that even he would prefer many of these alternate changes on the bandstand.

Review: Grassel reharmonized 393 tunes in 8 weeks? That's 10 per day. I am wondering about the quality of the final product. I can spend days, weeks or months reharmonizing just a single tune and still it's never really done. The whole thing has to hang together.I may return to this review after I digest the book thoroughly. BTW, what happened to Hazeltine's run at this?
