Review: A gripping, well-researched, and beautifully-written biography of American artist, wildlife photographer, conservationist, and bon vivant Peter Beard, who produced photos, diaries and artworks inspired by his love of Africa, animals, wildlife, and glamourous supermodels.

Graham Boynton, who was a friend of the late Beard, authoritatively chronicles the life and times of Beard's non-stop madswirl adventures in Kenya, New York, Denmark, London, and across the international art and party circuit; partying at all hours, breaking hearts, taking copious amounts of drugs, and making great friendships wherever he went. Boynton deliciously brings to life the rollicking parties, love- and art-making at Beard's Hog Ranch in Kenya, near where Karen Blixen lived, and at his laid-back Montauk compound on Long Island. Warhol, Bowie, Jagger, Trumbo, McInerney and Cindy Crawford, the cast of characters are a veritable who's who of NYC in the go-go '70s, '80s and beyond.

Prices for Beard's artworks have soared in recent decades into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, well before his mysterious death in April 2020, but so far no major museums have acquired any of his works. The final chapters of the biography explore how photography is viewed in the artworld, and the legacy that Beard leaves behind as an artist, including by an increasingly controlling widow, Nejma Beard, who has tried to control his estate, and legacy, in the later years of his life. We painfully see how Nejma builds walls around Beard in his later years, suing many of his business partners and friends, and suffocating the dear friendships and collaborations that Beard's life was built and celebrated around.

Review: Who was Peter Beard? The question may best be answered by his medical diagnoses or described by his crazy, somewhat pathological behavior, which never really changed. When you spend five months in the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Hospital in your early 20s, you’re probably not headed for a life of copacetic normality. Peter was stunningly beautiful and clearly bipolar. He also possessed some talent as a photographer. How much talent is debatable. And the behavior of his wife in attempting to corral his excesses while micromanaging his estate makes me completely disinclined to acquire any of his work. I suspect this book will have limited appeal. Like its subject, it’s just out there in left field.

Review: I found Peter Beard. I'm a bow hunter and retired NYC fireman I am Dave Schleifer .I read Wild by Grahm Boynton this season while bow hunting. My kindle is stocked full of Non-Fiction for the hunting season. This book was one of my favorite reads. I have a new respect for Peter Beard his artwork his life his compassion for nature and the life he enjoyed.. The above picture is the woods where Peter Walked on his last few hours on Earth the night he died. I finished this book in a tree stand he walked by. RIP Peter Beard. Fantastic Read buy this book. Review: Peter Beard is one of my favorite artist. His works conjure up so many things for me. Who was this extraordinary man? What made him tick? What were those years like in Africa ? Even with so much to read, I’m still left with wanting more. Fascinating read! Highly recommend.

Title: How to make an exciting life bland...

Review: I was a casual acquaintance of Peter Beard's, as such, I was looking forward to this book to provide some insight into the life of this enigmatic man. No such luck.

First, this book is poorly written and barely edited. Never mind the lack of commas and basic punctuation errors... The prose is trite, cliched and adjectives get repeated, and repeated...Mr. Beard may have been both, but how many times can you use "insouciant" and "profligate" in a ten page span? I counted eleven. The author should have invested in a Thesaurus.

Second, the story follows no chronology, and meanders down a path of its own choosing...Flash forward, flash back...Buckle up it's a ride.

Finally, the author replies too heavily upon the recollections of just a few Peter Beard's cronies to tell the story of this complicated man. Given that Peter Beard died so recently, one wishes the author had done more research, developed better sources and gotten both sides of the wealth of narrative that made up interesting Beard's life.

Peter Beard was a captivating man. This was not a captivating book.
