Title: Pieces depicted by race and gender

Review: We bought this book based on the reviews but were disappointed and upset that the book depicts the chess pieces along race/gender lines on the cover and several of the pages. The king and queen are a white man and woman, the knight and rook are unknown, the bishop is a white man on the cover - but the pawns? They’re depicted as a black man and a young white woman. I’m not sure why the pieces were depicted this way but I’m not interested in my kids associating the weakest pieces in the game with minority groups, or the powerful as white only. There have been many black and brown kings and queens In history, many white peasants, many powerful women... to depict the pieces along race and gender lines is to reinforce a worldview I want my kids to see beyond.

Review: If you're reading this review what you really want to know is, "should I buy this"? The short answer is YES and here's why.

My kid came home from school a few days ago and informed me that he and his friends found a “new game” that they were all learning how to play. “Dad, have you ever heard of a game called chess? I don’t quite understand it all, but it’s a lot of fun”. Wait… What…? Who are you and what have you done with my child. Seriously, they’ve found something that doesn’t have a screen or joysticks to hold their attention? So, me being THAT dad I immediately went out and got this book. It’s great for teaching kids the fundamentals of the game as well as giving them simple strategies that can help them win. This book was such a hit that not only did he go through the entire thing in about a day, he even asked if he could take it to school to share with his class. Will wonders never cease. I’m noy sure what else really needs to be said. 8 year old 3rd grader tested, 8 year old 3rd graders approved, Enough said.

Bottom line, if you’re looking for a book that's a good introductory to chess this is a really good choice. Oh, and for those who are wondering why I didn;t just send him to an online site like Chesskids.com, the honest truth is that he actually prefers the book.

Title: Extremely well done Kids Chess book!

Review: My 6 year old grandson came home from Kindergarten pumped up about the "new" game he learned from his teacher. We ordered a giant sized set for him to play at home and I set out to find a beginner's book, in part so his Mom and I could refresh our memory of the game! My father and I spent hours of fond memories playing Chess, and although he taught us his secret strategies, no doubt he let me win many times.
The Author's passion for the game and depiction of the importance of ALL pieces is evident in every page, including her Bio for teaching underprivileged children this timeless game. I felt the only negative review focusing solely on perceived racial overtones is truly unfounded, but order the book and judge for yourself! I studied the book depicting 144 pages of gold and gray chess pieces on all but 7 pages and found the brown-faced pieces on 4 of 7 pages depicted as strong and very important, as was the 3 of 7 pages of light skinned or female characters....sad enough a parent would portray this mindset to her children, let alone cast doubt on the brilliant enthusiasm & work on the part of the author. I "move" all of us can enjoy this game together, irrespective of our gender, age, race or financial background. Now on to those strategies....

Review: I bought this book to help me teach my 5 year old grandson to play chess. Although the book is way above a 5 year old reading level, it provided a straightforward step by step way for me to teach him chess and taught me a number of new skills too. Part I starts with learning the moves of each piece, and the rules of the game. It contains activities for practice. Part I ends with chess notation, which we have not yet gotten to. Part II contains illustrations of patterns of play and strategies that are clear and understandable. Although my grandson is not ready for Part II yet, I look forward to showing him these examples as he gets older. And until he gets there, I am enjoying learning as I read ahead!

Review: I bought this book for my niece who is about to turn 8, and I have to say this is an excellent introductory book for teaching young kids how to play chess. This book is fun and simplified, yet thorough enough to set the ground work for children to get a good understanding of the board, the chess pieces, and the basic tactics and strategy of the game. Also, the images on the pages are well done, and great to look at.
Don't believe the negative comments you might see about this book from a certain confused 1 star reviewer...
I definitely recommend this chess book for kids. Five stars.
