Title: I was a NECC victim

Review: I have to offer a sincere thank you to author Jason Dearen for bringing our story to light. It is an important story to tell, not only because so many of us suffered and died, but because it is a cautionary tale for the health care industry of the dangers of using compounded medicines. I received a contaminated steroid shot on August 31st, 2012. I started to get very sick three weeks later, however the 5 doctors/specialists I saw that week told me they couldn't find anything wrong. I even saw a neurologist who laughed and said it was a migraine, meanwhile I was in full blown meningitis. When I received a letter in the mail shortly thereafter from Box Hill Surgery Center that I 'may' have been exposed to a contaminated shot, the light bulb went on and I went to the local hospital for a spinal tap after opening the envelope. No one called me from the clinic, they mailed a letter. I had to wait 7 hours and was on the verge of being discharged because I looked fine and my vitals/blood work was normal. Actually, I was dying. My white blood cell count in my cerebral spinal fluid was over 400. The fungus was eating my brain. That local hospital discharged me two weeks later without access to the meds I needed and I was rushed to Hopkins 3 days later (in the midst of a stroke) where my life was truly saved. A Hopkins doctor took my hand in the ER bed and told me he was going to save my life. That is the last thing I remember for about three weeks. I never knew who that doctor was, but I thank him for giving me hope because I thought I was going to die.
Ultimately I ended up having fungal meningitis, a stroke, a brain aneurysm, a spinal abscess the size of a quarter that was surgically removed, kidney failure, liver failure and I now live with a permanent spinal cord injury called Adhesive Arachnoiditis that causes intractable burning pain from my waist down. I lost half of my hair, wasted down to 105 pounds, had to relearn to walk and suffered more than I ever knew human beings could suffer. I lived through torture with daily vomiting, my body shutting down, hallucinations, light sensitivity and depression. I wished for death frequently. I was only 42. My husband took his life two years into my illness. Somehow I know my illness and the stress it caused for him, was a factor. I miss him so much. I also was a certified group fitness instructor but have slowly lost my fitness business due to my inability to continue that line of work.

I warms my heart to know that there are good people out there that tried to help us. The prosecutors, certain doctors, some congress members, etc. The people mentioned in the book who tried to warn about the compounding industry. There was a $100 million dollar victims fund established, but the two payments I've received were laughable considering people like Erin Andrews get 55 million for being exposed and only suffered psychological harm. I received $110,000 total from the victims fund and I will have limitations and pain the rest of my life. I put all that money towards my house because I would have lost it after my husband's death. I was not able to buy anything nice or fancy, as a widow, I had to keep a roof over my head. My lawyers (who did nothing for me) received more than I did. In fact, most lawyers I've heard about received more than most victims. The lawyers who established the victims fund took millions off the top. It is astounding that this whole debacle originated from greed. Cadden's greed. Even the doctor who gave me the shot was just trying to increase profit by purchasing cheap steroids. I think she saved around 2 bucks by giving me that shot. My medical bills were in the millions, but the cost of the suffering is incalculable. All to save 2 bucks and to get Cadden and his crony in-laws a ritzy lifestyle.

There is a bigger lesson here about human nature. In the USA, we operate under a highly competitive system that values money, prestige and material things over respect, compassion, love and safety. My illness has taken me back to the basics, stripped me bare if you will. I see wealth differently. I wonder who suffered to provide such nice things (laborers, the Earth, animals, the little people). I will never put my health in anyone else's hands ever again. Our health care system is profit based and they do not have our best interest at heart. I now eat a completely natural plant based whole food diet. I walk 2 miles most days if I can. I watch birds and go in the woods to get away from people. I try to do yoga and pilates even though it hurts like hell when I bend in certain ways from my injury. I stay close to God, I try to do for others. I stay out of doctor's office as I am in charge of my health, not them.

I cannot make sense of why I survived, I should not have, but I did. I am so sorry for those who lost their lives and those who lost loved ones. I am so sorry for the other survivors who still hurt and have lingering health issues. What was done to us was beyond ugly. We were let down by the health care system and in certain ways we were let down by the legal system. Our lives are irreparably changed. This book tells our story. Thank you Jason for writing it.

Review: Written by an amazing journalist, Jason Dearen has taken the time to analyze and to report on every detail surrounding the fungal meningitis outbreak that happened in 2012. Although it was not covered in any great degree at that time, these two pharmacists conspired to focus only on the money making aspect of dispensing pharmaceuticals without any regard for the safety and quality of the compounds that were being made. Mold was prevalent throughout their facilities for at least a decade and this directly lead to the harm of tens of thousands of people. We may never know the true scale of the harm caused by these people. Read on to find out more about this deadly outbreak.

We may yet see another larger outbreak because the problems were never fully remediated...

Title: Fast-paced thriller detailing an epic fight for justice

Review: In the fall of 2012, an unknown disease was harming Americans all over the country. The CDC and the FDA eventually traced the cause back to contaminated steroid injections produced and shipped by New England Compounding Center, a compounding pharmacy located in Framingham, Massachusetts. NECC's contaminated drugs led to a nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak that harmed 793 patients, of which more than 100 people died. It was one of the worst public health crises ever caused by a pharmaceutical drug.

In his new book, Kill Shot, Dearen takes the reader through a fast-paced thriller that details the incredible NECC story from the diagnosis of patient zero, to the discovery of the contaminated steroid, to the trial and conviction of Barry Cadden, NECC's founder and CEO. He provides gripping first-hand accounts of the efforts of CDC epidemiologists and scientists to identify the source of the illnesses along with horrifying tales from former NECC employees about its "clean rooms" and the fraudulent way NECC made its sterile drugs. Lastly, Dearen documents the tireless efforts of the federal prosecutors to fight for justice on behalf of the victims.

While the rise of NECC was undoubtedly a regulatory failure, the response to the outbreak by the CDC, FDA, and the Department of Justice showed the government at its best.

Title: An incredible thriller that's (unfortunately) also a true story

Review: When this story broke in 2012, I was stunned. How could a compounding pharmacy have inflicted so much pain, suffering, and death on an unsuspecting public? The story of NECC was all over the news where I live, and yet in Kill Shot, Jason Dearen has managed to unearth new details while pouring them into a compelling narrative that's hard to put down. For fans of true crime stories, this book is one to get.

But beyond that, it's revealing piece of investigative journalism that shines light on an under-regulated part of the pharmaceutical industry. There are thousands of compounding pharmacies in the U.S., each making a number of drugs that are often directly injected into a patient's veins, making purity and cleanliness vitally important. And yet in Kill Shot, we discover that the NECC was delivering drugs that were anything but.

This book should be a wake up call to lawmakers and regulators to ensure that tragedies like this don't happen again.
