Summer, 1643

England is at war with itself. King Charles I has fled London, his negotiations with Parliament in tatters. The country is consumed by bloodshed.

For Thomas Hill, a man of letters quietly running a bookshop in the rural town of Romsey, knowledge of the war is limited to the rumours that reach the local inn.

When a stranger knocks on his door one night and informs him that the king's cryptographer has d

Review: The King’s Spy
By Bob Gelms

The year is 1643 and England is embroiled in a violent civil war. Charles I couldn’t come to grips with the demands of Parliament so he moved his court to the ancient university town of Oxford where he sat commanding his forces. This is also the time of the Reformation, which adds a religious taint to the political machinations. Protestants and Catholics are at each other’s throats pitting friend against friend, neighbor against neighbor, and, sometimes, brother against brother. It is an altogether ugly time in England.

For centuries, diplomats and generals have used codes and ciphers to pass along information and battle orders so, if intercepted, they couldn’t be read. This practice can be traced all the way back to Julius Caesar who personally invented one that he used in his various military campaigns and during his reign. By the time of Charles I these codes and ciphers had become very sophisticated and were relied upon with great expectation by the powers that be. Most of the royal courts in Europe at the time all had a court cryptologist on the payroll.

Andrew Swanston has written a historical novel, The King’s Spy, which mixes all of the above into a delectable stew sure to please any pallet. Our hero, Thomas Hill, lives in a little village, Romsey, with his widowed sister and his nieces. He was educated at Oxford where he won many prizes as a mathematician. His hobby, as it were, is cryptology. Thomas is a nerd…a very intelligent nerd. He runs a bookshop out of his house to make ends meet which does nothing but cement his nerdiness.

One night there is a loud knock on his door. The times would make one wary about answering a door at that time of night but Thomas had nothing to fear. Politically he had kept his head down so was not under any kind of subversive suspicion by either the Catholics or the Protestants. The visitor was a friar named Simon de Pointz who, as the story rolls along, proves to be a cunning and resourceful man. He brings a message to Thomas from the king whose cryptologist just died. When searching for a new man for the position the King asked around and Thomas’ name popped up more than once. So Simon was dispatched to bring Thomas back to court to work for the King.

Thomas undergoes a crisis of conscious. He wasn’t too sure he wanted to work for the king’s side in the clash but Thomas talks himself into it in a fashion that would have made Thomas Aquinas smile – a lot. So off he goes to court in Oxford. There, things start to heat up when he gets on the wrong side of some rich folk through no fault of his own.

When brutal, bloody bodies start to show up in strange places Thomas is in danger. As he does his work for the king and tries to avoid getting skewered by a couple of gentleman of the upper class, it becomes clear that there is a traitor at court. A message is intercepted that is written in an almost unbreakable code called the Vigenere Cipher, (which exists in real life and withstood efforts to break it for hundreds of years). Thomas sets to work on it. You will have to read the book to find out what happens.

In The King’s Spy there is an abundance of fascinating information about codes, ciphers and the English civil war all wrapped up in a wonderful historical mystery. This is also the first book in a trilogy featuring Thomas Hill. You will have to excuse me as I must set about reading the other two.

Title: Rather interesting

Review: I found the book to be interesting enough to keep me occupied until the end. It was well researched as far as history goes. I could wish for a little more action, I guess. If you are interested in codes you will find it very informative. However, the detailing of Thomas Hills's efforts to break the codes were a waste of time for me. You can skip them and proceed with the story as I did. So, if the history of the English Civil War interests you, then you should try this book.

Title: It's 5star keeper-reread!

Review: I was hooked from the first through to the end! The mini nice age, pre Henry XIII time in England was unfamiliar to me and though Swanson doesn't write a documentary he gives enough background and atmosphere to immerse the reader into the period.
The thought process of Thomas, the cryptologist was a fascinating bonus. The life in England, coarse language (very little swearing) and realities of war would make me recommend it for older teens and adults, but I highly recommend this book!

Title: GOOD READ
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on April 24, 2015
Review: I recommend this book. I read a promotional e-copy from Amazon.

The read was easy, and the author's writing mechanics were excellent. The errors were too few to mention. The book was neither too long nor too short. The author kept his character count manageable. The book was set in the mid 1600's in England during the English civil wars. The Hundred Years War and the Wars of the Roses were over. Midway through the book I got somewhat confused because I was reading about monks, friars and abbeys which were too Catholic sounding for the established Church of England. Had I read the author's notes first, that bit of confusion could have been avoided.

The book is a historical mystery. With mysteries come spies and coded messages. The main character is one of the best cryptologists in England. He must solve an encrypted and intercepted message to preserve the health and life of the queen and the country. Who wrote the message? What does the message mean? Who are the secret traitors to the crown? Who can be trusted? The coded message is particularly hard to decode, but the efforts to do so keep this story moving right along. The main character has not the countenance of a hero to the crown and the country, but he knows his business and has noble and admirable characteristics. If you like solving cryptograms, you may find yourself actually reading the letters and figures in the coded message. Overall, the book had just the right touch of this and that to make me take notice of this author. I will read him again.

Thank you, Mr. Swanston, for a Good Read!

Title: Hard to judge
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on February 20, 2015
Review: To begin with, I like the mystery. The plot holds together and doesn't wander off on tangents. Characters are well developed and the hero is sympathetic.

Before I had finished the first chapter, I stopped and did a quick brush up on the English civil war. That was very helpful to keep events and historical players in mind.

There is quite a bit on cryptanalysis including a rather extensive explanation on the Vigenere square. Personally, I found it interesting, but after a basic description, I skimmed the technical bits (with no damage to the plot).

My one complaint, and it is major, is the extensive, detailed, repetitive, in-your-face descriptions of filth. I appreciate that it was part of the historical scene. I do. My feeling, however, is that it was overdone, dreary and unnecessary. An occasional reminder is sufficient. I won't be buying the next installment.

Title: Excellent English Civil War Espionage Mystery AudioBook
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on June 5, 2020
Review: I loved the story overall. Exciting espionage and murder mystery. The hero is a decent young man caught up in the war asked to serve the King. A great look at Charles I court in Oxford and Oxford in the civil war. I agree with another reviewer there's too much detailed descriptions of filth. Harder to skip through on the audio book. The narration was good. Also way too much explanation of the ciphers decrypting. Again harder to jump forward on the audio. Otherwise an exciting read.
