Title: Think about what you want from a GIMP book and carefully consider this one.

Review: I always look at reviews before making a purchase and try to decide which totally negative views are just plain silly. Let me first say that I am reviewing this book as a photographer who enjoys modifying, restoring and upgrading photos. If you take photographs, you just have to do this or you are throwing away treasures. If you have old family photos hanging around, you need to restore them to their original state at the very least.

This book is BIG and covers things at first in a general way. That is what you need to get started. The first chapter tells you about the GIMP environment and how to set it up to work the way you want it to. You need to know this information and it is very basic. Sounds like a lot of computerese gobbledygook some of the critics say. Well, if you use a computer, you will have to put up with that. You need to look at WHAT the lesson is telling you and follow the instructions. You can move on quickly to the good stuff after that.

Another silly criticism is that, well it only talked about keyboard shortcuts and someone or other didn't like that. First realize that this book was written for Gimp Version 2.8. Some of the menus, tool windows and so on have changed with the newer version 2.1 and its upgrades. So you have the choice with the keyboard shortcuts. You can search out the tool from the menu dropdowns or follow the book with its keyboard shortcuts. And actually, if you do prefer menu drop downs, notice that the keyboard shortcut is always shown on the drop down menu items. So you can do either.

The initial chapters ARE pretty basic. They are to show you the potential power of the GIMP program, no matter the version you are using. They are simple tutorials with illustrations to practice on from the books website.

Then the chapters get more into the power of the tools but also in tutorial format.

Afterwards every tool is examined TOTALLY. These tools have complicated and powerful adjustments. So once you have mastered understanding of what they are, the later chapters deal with them in depth.

So use the book as you see fit. For example, I totally skip the sections on art and drawing and move on to anything that is part of photography. I look at a tool in depth after I have learned what it does and now I find I need to use it.

What my concern was before purchasing the book, is that it would be a complete learning and reference tool on all of the GIMP features. It is that, so I am happy I bought it. I do not need any other books. If I need a quick reference about something I just don't understand how to do, I just do an Internet search on that topic to add to what I have already learned from the book.

GIMP is a lot more of an affordable way for me to enjoy modifying photographs. And it is much more powerful than my ancient Adobe Photoshop version I own. I could never afford the newer ones.

So I highly recommend this book and a little patience in learning.

Review: Dead trees are not the modern media for software documentation, but this is for my step-grandson. I do not want him to be illiterate, to be google dependent for any useful knowledge. As a retired teacher, I know all modern students are stupid, and they are all stupid in the same way - They cannot remember a damn thing. Ask them a question, they don't even try to use their atrophied brains, the whip out their phones and google the answer. This book is an introduction to mnemonic media for him.

Title: Liked the goal oriented tutorials

Review: I bought this book to use GIMP to tidy up my photographs. This book helped me achieve that goal. The first half of the book is chock-full of step by step tutorials to perform many common photo manipulation and other graphics tasks. I was able to learn everything by following along as the authors described the steps. Keep in mind, this is a doing book. You need to repeat the steps as they describe it for true learning to occur. It would also help if you consider the tutorials to be a starting point, and then practice the tools by yourself, perhaps with some additional Googling.

I did not like the ebook version of this book. The changes to some pictures are subtle and difficult to notice on an e-reader. There are a lot of picture references that are difficult to flip to and comprehend on an iPad or Kindle. You will do much better with the paper book. A nice touch is that the paper book is printed on quality paper, and is saddle stitched!

Title: Get the most out of GIMP

Review: If you use GIMP, this will help you get the most out of it. The directions are pretty clear. My only gripe is sometimes you have to hunt to solve some of the more obscure problems that are really quirks of GIMP and nothing to do with this book (i.e., GIMP has boxes that close and you can't figure out how to re-open them, or other strange little quirks that are beginner-frustrating). It's not the books fault GIMP does this, but I wish they'd mentioned that when you go to enlarge or erase things there are quirky things that will leave you ripping out your hair when your mouse suddenly stops working.

Review: I'm computer savvy, been using them since apple ][ and before. Been using Linux exclusively for ten years(debian, if anyone cares)

However, I am seriously deficient in any photo manipulation knowledge. I bought this book hoping it would 'teach me the basics' as it claims, however it only skims over basics assuming a level of knowledge that is beyond me. I found it completely useless as a learning tool. I was unable to figure out from this book how to do simple things like manually crop a photo, let alone understand layers. it touches on concepts but assumes a much higher level of knowledge(of photo manipulation in general) then it claims.

As a previous reviewer said, the 'tutorials' without the specific photos used are pretty much useless as a learning tool.

Hopefully in a few years, when I've learned how to manipulate photos in general, I can use this as a reference, but for now it's a doorstop.

I read technical history and textual criticism books on a regular basis, so I do not think it's a lack of reading comprehension.
