Review: This book is written in a conversational style with humor and real-world examples that make it easy to read and quick to digest. George provides a nice overview of all of the different techniques commonly used to create forecasts and estimates both for an entire project as well as smaller milestones. There is something in there for everyone; even as a 21-year veteran working in Agile environments, I learned a valuable technique: "Affinity Estimation" where you bucket high-level chunks into S/M/L/XL and then decompose a few and track actuals to get a sense of how much time a given-size bucket represents. In fact I am recommending this approach for a large federal engagement where some folks are wrongly asserting that being agile means "constant scope increases and inability to forecast completion are normal." The author reminds us that, in fact, agile methods lend themselves beautifully to statistical and probabilistic approaches, since we tend to work on a large number of tiny, similar-sized chunks. He reminds us that it doesn't even matter if the chunks aren't identical; precision is not required. "How many blocks away is that Starbucks?"
I did miss a few things I would have liked to see in the book; but also I recognize that they would probably have made the book longer. Maybe some ideas for a 2nd edition (hint hint). George clearly has a very deep understanding of many different estimation and forecasting methods, but sometimes omits their formal name, e.g. NoEstimates, Reference Class Forecasting, "dark matter" expansion, "S" or "Z" curve. I appreciate that using accessible language makes the text easier to understand, but respectfully submit that mentioning terminology that is in wide use can help folks understand correlations/connections. Maybe those could be done in sidebars or footnotes to avoid confusion? One final nit: I would love to see more coverage of the US federal government context, though admittedly it is quite specialized. In the US federal govt space, projects are often started from scratch, with all-new staff most of whom have never met each other before and with relatively few having any subject matter knowledge. The reasons for this stem from the government's need to preserve fair competition, and the irony is that this kind of situation is not only the worst possible place from which to try to make a forecast, but also the place where accurate forecasts are most urgently needed.
Having said all that, I still give this book 5 stars-- it is full of practical and useful advice, and addresses an urgent need. A worthy successor to Mike Cohn's Agile Estimating and Planning. I also highly recommend Dan Vacanti's "When Will It Be Done." Speaking as an experienced "agilist" we need all the help we can get in this area!

Review: I love pretty much everything about this book; I love the conversational tone, the side comments that make it feel real, the history lessons, and the practical advice. As a manager, I like how is also neatly encapsulates the dichotomy between needing predictability in an hard-to-predictable domain. There's a respect for the needs of all parties - managers and developers alike. And the way it handles the #noestimates folk is equally respectful.

This book will easily compliment Cohn's seminal work. Were I still a developer, I would buy this book. Were I still managing tech teams, I would buy this book. That's the best thing I can say.

Review: George Dinwiddie's book is one of the most balanced and experience-based I have read on this topic.

It is in a good, conversational style which aids with quick reading, but it is also full of insights that will cause you to highlight and return to various passages. It is easily skimmable, pleasantly readable, and wise.

His insights relate to the purposes and uses of estimates, and how to work in a system that uses them.

The book is surprisingly dogma-free and doesn't concentrate primarily on convincing people TO estimate or NOT TO estimate, nor does it evangelize a specific method of creating estimates. Instead, George examines various estimation methods and the business landscape around them. He reveals better ways to use estimates and warns us against most misuses of estimates.

If you work as a manager or for a manager and your work involves estimation of time and/or effort, then you would be well served to pick up (and share) a copy.

Review: George Dinwiddie has done the software world an incredible favor. His new book - Software Estimation Without Guessing - gives guidance on how to estimate based on your needs and situation. No more hand waving and guessing. He carefully provides ideas and practices to help teams answer the critical questions of "When will this be done?" and "How much will this cost?". I'm a big fan of this book and have already started to use many of George's ideas in my own practice and classes. Highly recommended.

Review: George Dinwiddie has focused on a specific part of a program or project manager's job: estimation. For those of you who are not accountants and want to understand the how's of and reasoning behind estimation, this is a great reference. George presents estimation in the context in which most estimation requests are placed -- making the read a helpful one to anyone who is expected to estimate the cost of a software project. His examples and descriptions are thoughtful and easily understandable. I recommend this book as a guide.

Review: This is one of those books that codifies and clarifies things that I sort of already knew. But by bringing them out of my intuition/subconscious and into the area of my mind that I think with, it makes them a lot more valuable; I can think about them. I suspect, after a few re-reads, I may come to value it as much as Design Patterns or Refactoring (both of those are also "I knew that, but didn't know I knew that" books).
