Review: Admittedly, I saw the title of this book and purchased it out of intrigue and skepticism.The author makes some good arguments about why some (maybe most) men are able to climb the career ladder. Without spoiling the book, I will say that I liked the emphasis on EQ, AI, and other methods that can be applied to select better leaders.The problems I had with the book are Chamorro-Premuzic's references to "science" studies and Freudian concepts. You'll see these pop up as you're reading, so be skeptical when the author make certain assertions as being concrete facts. Also, there are some over generalizations throughout.

Review: This book is based on solid research (sorry, narcissists, I know you will not like the findings) and provides suggestions that can help organizations improve the quality of leadership. No, the solution in NOT just hiring and promoting more women - it is hiring and promoting competent, humble, teachable, and caring people. A must-read for any board, and all involved in hiring and promoting. Implementing these straightforward solutions will require discipline and commitment, but will result in stronger and better organizations.

Review: I had high hopes for this book. I am a female Engineer that works for a large company. I hoped there would be some guidance on how to handle male leaders ( the 'fix' part). The 1st half of the book was great then it seemed to loose steam. I did enjoy the book and it is worth reading but the end could have been so much better.

Review: This books offers an interesting point of view about how, when it comes to choosing the best leaders, our current standards and natural instincts are deeply flawed. The author did a good deal of research and he offers many interesting examples to explain, in great detail, the consequences of our negligent selections. As a solution, he not only also argues in favor of putting more scientific thinking in our leader's selection process to avoid choosing the worst type of leaders (e.g. narcissists, psychopaths), but also presents interesting arguments in favor of choosing more women as leaders instead, maintaining that the statistics show they typically better than men, less prone than men to certain common leadership vices, and apparently, possess higher levels of natural EQ. One of its main ideas is that for women to be taken into account as leaders they should avoid turning into something they are not, i.e. yet another copy of a flawed male leader, with all their known vices and weaknesses. As such, women should be valued as leaders for what they already have to offer. The book appears to be really well-founded and the author provides dozens of references to other interesting scientific studies, papers, and articles that, allegedly, back up his line of thinking. This is one of those books worth reading simply because it bursts your bubble, it makes you think, it questions the status quo and offers a fresh perspective on a very well known problem. The message in favor of more women leadership is very powerful and I swear I thought the author was a woman until after I had reached the end of the book when I did some additional investigation on its prolific author

Review: Purchased after seeing the provocative title name; was not disappointed in the content of the book. The author challenges the traditional approach to leadership using SCIENCE and DATA. So refreshing. The chapters on confidence and charisma vs. competence are so timely and necessary. Everyone should read as we evaluate our 2020 presidential candidates. :)

Business and all institutions need to better understand what makes for a competent leader, how to access leadership, and make decisions that fullfills the responsiblity of an organization, that is, to provide its employees with competent leadership.

Review: This is a very well argued book with lots of data to support every point. It discusses how people are drawn to toxic leaders who actually do not deliver results and often are out for themselves rather than the organizations they serve. The author makes recommendations for how to avoid hiring and promoting people who appear to be the next shiny thing, and instead to look for those qualities in people who inspire others to work together to achieve organizational goals. This book is a must-read winner for anyone interested in the leadership field.

Review: Makes valid points that the same personality traits that make people more likely to GET a leadership job also make them less effective at DOING that job. But I dispute one of his central themes - that those negative traits are far more common in men than women. Also makes valid points about what we should look for in potential leaders . He does NOT promote gender based hiring or promotion, but argues that if we hire and promote based on the right qualities, that will naturally mean more women in leadership.
