On 16 March 1807, the British Parliament passed The Abolition of the Slave Trade Act. In the following year the Royal Navy's African Squadron was formed, its mission to stop and search ships at sea suspected of carrying slaves from Africa to the Americas and the Middle East. With typical thoroughness, the Royal Navy went further, and took the fight to the enemy, sailing boldly up uncharted rivers and creeks to attack the barracoon's where the slaves were assembled ready for shipment. For much of its long campaign against the evil of slavery Britain's Navy fought alone and unrecognised. Its enemies were many and formidable. Ranged against it were the

Review: The topic of suppressing the African Slave trade is rarely mentioned anywhere. In the end, the British did most of it. The only problem I have is the gaps in years where the author had to skip to avoid writing a 1200 page tome. The book would have benefited from transitions to explain the gaps. Even so, I can recommend this book easily for anyone who wants to know more about this complex topic.

Review: Regarding slavery, the standard narrative is that Europeans were the bad guys and Africans were the victims.
This book supplies ample evidence that Europeans, especially the British Navy, were instrumental in ending the slave trade, despite the efforts of Africans and others to keep it going.

Some memorable parts of the book:

"Contrary to popular belief, slavery in Africa was not initiated by the white man but was homegrown, often the consequence of intertribal warfare. Long before the arrival of foreigners on their shores, it was the habit of local chieftains to make slaves of prisoners taken in battle. Any surviving men, women and children on the losing side were enslaved as a matter of course and for as long as their conquerors wished. In the rare times when peace reigned between tribes, the shortfall was made up by enslaving those who committed crimes against the community."

The book quotes Sir James Yeo, who wrote in 1816, "Neither mountains, rivers nor deserts will prove barriers to the slave trade, as the black chiefs will bring their slaves from every extremity of Africa as long as there is a nation that will afford them a slave market."

Edwards concludes, "It had taken all of ninety years, but thanks to the persistence of the British Government and the valiant work of the Royal Navy, Africa had at last rid itself of the evil of slave trading."

He mentions that about 2000 British sailors died for the cause. Although this is a huge sacrifice, the 11+ million enslaved Africans dwarf that number. Still, what makes this book valuable is that it forces us to rethink the standard story that dead white European men were all bad and that all Africans were victims. The reality is more nuanced.

In the epilogue, he discusses Zimbabwe, which "typifies the end of the African dream."
Indeed, the country had it all. Europeans proved that by making it "one of Africa's success stories."
However, after Robert Mugabe took over, it went from being Africa's breadbasket to its basket case.

His somber conclusion is, "And as self-impoverished Africa slips back into the abyss of the dark ages, the slave trade has returned.... The trade involves most states in sub-Saharan Africa. The children are kidnapped or purchased for $20-70 each by slavers in poorer states, such as Benin and Togo, and sold into slavery in sex dens or as unpaid domestic servants for $350 each in weather oil-rich states, such as Nigeria and Gabon."

However, if the British Navy were to intervene in Africa today to stop such slave trade, some would call it neo-colonialism.

Review: Nice short history of the Royal Navy's little-known, decades long (although finally successful) effort to halt the Atlantic slave trade, and then the Arab slave trade on the East African coast. Many swashbuckling anecdotes. The book has three decent area maps and a few interesting illustrations.

The Royal Navy's Africa station got the cast-off warships that could be spared. Each chapter begins with a memorial inscription (from various churches in England) memorializing a naval officer who lost his life while performing this honorable but hazardous duty. The battle at Lagos in 1851 was all new to me.

The slave ships were often fast sailors, and surprisingly well-armed - hunting them down was no lark. Most impressive is not so much the scale of the British effort, but its longevity and cost, in both blood and gold.

Naval history publishing skews heavily towards the big battles and great leaders, so Mr. Edwards (and Pen & Sword) is to be commended for a history of this almost unknown campaign.

Title: The end of the bloodiest of trades.

Review: In 1807 Britain abolished the Slave Trade and in 1808 the Royal Navy formed it's African Squadron. Their task was to seek out those ships suspected of carrying slaves from Africa to the Americas and elsewhere. In true Nelsonian style, the Royal Navy took the fight to the enemy and sailed their ships right into the heartland through un-chartered rivers in order to destroy the slave ships at close quarters. But the enemy fought back.

For ninety years the Royal Navy fought alone and forgotten. They fought against African chiefs who sold their own people into slavery and against powerful Arabs who made great fortunes. They also fought against well armed and well trained private warships sent to deal with this self-appointed British force. This was a time when masters of slave ships would so arrange the chaining of the slaves below decks that, should a British warship approach, they would open a hatch on the blind side of their ship and drop a heavy weight attached to those shackles sending hundreds of slaves to a watery grave below at a stroke - just so that they could deny having had slaves on board.

It was a long and hard war which cost the British many men and ships until, eventually, Empires within Africa changed over to the export of locally grown produce. Only then had this war been won.

In a thrilling, yet often disturbing account of the final years of the slave trade, author Bernard Edwards provides the reader with a well-balanced account of this little-known period from British naval history.

Title: Maybe too information
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on January 27, 2023
Review: Overall, the book was excellent
However there are several concerns. Firstly, too much information is not always good. Less is best. The information on the British conqueroring the slave trade is outstanding
It gives the reader an idea where slavery originally started.
Again it's about the maps. The maps are located in front. It needs to be spread out throughout the contents.
A must read for everyone. Again, too much information spoils the greatness of the book.
Continue the outstanding research and writing important books like this one. I look forward to them
