Title: Great with a few issues…

Review: This story is a smorgasbord of sub-plots. There are adults suffering from childhood abandoned, the AIDs epidemic, Puerto Rican independence, US politics, closeted homosexuality, romance and hoarding (to name a few). It ALMOST works together…but not fully.

Olga’s emotional journey is fascinating and the author writes her story beautifully. The book was structured nicely and I liked how the past was interwoven with the present. The characters are complex and flawed and the relationship dynamics work well throughout. I also really enjoyed learning more about Puerto Rico and how much injustice the country has faced. From what I can tell, the author remains factual in her discussion of the political issues going on in Puerto Rico even though the book itself is fiction.

There were two niggles that kept this from being a 5-star read…
The underlying political vibes occasionally became so prevalent they disrupted the flow of the story. As I’ve said before, if I wanted a political agenda, I’d turn on the news. Secondly, the author seemed confused…as if she couldn’t quite decide if the book was a light-hearted romance or a serious political and economic commentary. The plots awkwardly vacillates between the two genres. This “genre confusion” causes the story to feel slightly muddled and lacking in focus

Despite my criticism, I enjoyed the book and recommend to those who enjoy learning about other cultures!

Title: Utterly amazing good book!

Review: I was blown away by this book. It’s a riveting story with amazing characters which also tells a tale of Puerto Rico and US neocolonialism. I just adored Olga. I found her mother to be monstrous, and I did not find it totally credible that Olga and her brother, after being abandoned and periodically manipulated by their mother, did not have an epiphany earlier. Instead they kept trying to gain her approval and love. I appreciate that the mother’s letters to them filled in the historical and political backstory of Puerto Rico but I found the letters too pedantic and preachy. Although I did love the book I had to take several long breaks from reading it. Anyway, in conclusion I do highly recommend this book.

Review: I almost gave this 4 stars because it was beyond belief that Olga & her family were exactly in relationships with pivotal characters and situations to see the Puerto Rican Storm from the eye of the Storm . However, every author uses devices to emphasize their thesis and to keep the story moving along.

I did find the shifting dates difficult to follow until I stopped trying to put the old timeline in order. What mattered was that those events, those words, were part of what turned our main characters into their adult selves and explained some of their character flaws.

I am guilty of ignoring or being blissfully unaware of how American people and the US Government , and apparently the PR government & greedy investors raped PR many times over. I find think I've ever understood how it was to be American born yet not accepted by either the new country or the old country. Having been awakened, I have vowed to become more educated.

Overall, the family dynamics were a fun background for the story, and the sexually unapologetic Olga was a delight. If you're looking for a bit of romance & romping, it's here. Right alongside many "in your eye" revelations of how ignorance does not absolve guilt.

A fun, thoughtful exposure to a human rights story.

Review: This book brought me on a journey to places I could reckon and recognize inside myself. The author does a beautiful job of giving the characters life from their neighborhoods to the processes that brought them where they are and together. I love Olga and all the internal contradictions and conflicts she faces. This book is gold…. Or perhaps Sol Libre.

Title: Great Story...but the ending...

Review: This is a complex story of family and Puerto Rican culture, interlaced with urban lifestyles and deep history of it's people. Olga is such a rich character. This story brought me back to NY and friends I used to know with their passion for life and how deep familial ties run. It gets a bit burdensome with the revolutionary underpinnings and some unbelievable scenarios near the end. The finale is abrupt after what is a slow burn towards the possible demise of her dreams. Overall an enjoyable read.
