I GOT so sick in my stomach when I heard in the news that the Governor of Bank of Ghana had responded to the call for his resignation and called the demonstrators hooligans . As if that is not enough, I also heard the President calling on the ECOWAS Parliament to prevail on the military in their respective countries to protect the democratically elected government for, according to him, Democracy in Africa is under attack. YES the President is right, but what he failed to tell us is those who are undermining the very principles on which this democracy we all ascribed to, is built.
IS it the military who are rescuing what is left of these countries from the greedy leaders? Or the masses who gave a sigh of relief from hunger and frustration? Or is it the judges who are selling justices to the rich and the powerful? Or the heads of the institutions who listen only to their appointing authorities?, Or the politicians who make themselves demi-gods and untouchable? Who then is attacking this democracy which is defined as the government of the people, by the people for the people?
WHEN will Africa politicians and leaders in the hem of affair ever learn from the rich history of the continent and provide the visionary and transformational leadership, Africa so badly needed? Africa has seen many military coups more than any continent and we expect leaders to learn from the past and stop things that lead to these coups. But NEVER. Things they owe ALLEGIANCE to supersede the NATIONAL INTEREST of their respective countries.
AFTER they come to beg for people's votes to lead, they then turn around to use the very power to make life very miserable for the people and still expect them to sit down and say nothing. They take bad decision, ransack the national coffers, acquire indiscriminately state properties in their individual names, put their cronies in vantage positions to perpetuate the suffering of the very people who gave them the power in the first place.
AND in any way, what kind of democracy is the president talking about that needs to be preserved? , is it the democracy that sold the citizenry into servitude to IMF/China? Or the one which permitted the keepers of the public purse to invite galamseyers and nation rakers to destroy the very environment which is sustaining all of us for their selfish and greedy reason?
BUT do I entirely blame the politicians, leaders and the heads of watchdogs institutions? No! There is a saying that every society deserves the kind of leaders they have at any point in time. Why? because we elected them. YES we gave them power based on many allegiance: he is a partyman, my family, my schoolmate, my business partner, he can talk, we are the same tribe, he has money, or he is my friend and many more but Never on the ground of COMPETENCE and NATIONAL INTEREST.
THEY then take this power to pursue their personal agenda, mismanage the economy, maltreat people and lead the country into destitution with no regards to the citizens. Why? because we sold our birth right and conscience to them. Once in power, they do everything to keep this power and if you don't fall in line, you lose your life. YOU GO FI TALK?
