Title: A peek into David Lynch's creative process

Review: Anyone familiar with Lynch's work would agree it is difficult to imagine how exactly he conjures the images he does. This book gives us a peek into how exactly he does it. This isn't a how-to guide to make David Lynchian copycat films/ art, but a much more potent guide to unlocking your own unique brand of creativity.

As the Buddhist saying goes "A finger pointing at the moon is not the moon. The finger is needed to know where to look for the moon, but if you mistake the finger for the moon itself, you will never know the real moon."

Catching the Big Fish might require a few read-throughs, but if you fully digest and internalize the lessons here to make them your own, I'm sure you'll come out the end a better artist.

Title: Interesting but not a must read

Review: As a professional artist, I was really curious to find out what the esteemed Mr. Lynch had to say about the creative process. I really respect his work and admire his talent. This book is filled with fun anecdotes and a few gems of insight but mostly it reads as an ad for Transcendental Meditation. It seems over 40% of the book is him talking about how he loves TM. I was so intrigued by his passion for TM that I attended an intro lecture in town.....which ultimately turns into a sales pitch for meditation instruction for....wait for it....$950!!! Why is it so expensive? Smells fishy to me.

Title: Good Quick Read

Review: Overall, it was a good book, but it is a really
quick read. Easily read the whole book over a weekend.

If reading because want to know more about Transcendental Meditation, you will probably want to get an additional book or 2. It is interesting to hear David discuss TM, his TM foundation, and interview others who practice TM, but if looking for a better understanding of the latest Scientific research on TM, probably want to pick up the book that David said was “the best-ever book on on Transcendental Meditation”. Book is Transcendence written by Doctor Rosenthall.

That said, reading David’s book has motivated me to re-watch his films/show. Interesting to watch Twin Peaks after reading this. Main character meditates, and can see how ideas expressed in this book are sprinkled throughout the show.

Review: This is a pile of garbage advertising his meditation program; found a nice home for the book in the trashcan. This book has nothing to do with creativity or meditation, but for the low low introductory price of just $1000 you can go to his school for TM meditation, and get your catchy meditation catch phrase.

Review: A very good friend of mine worked for David Lynch until her death. When she told me was a meditator, back in 1992, I found it hard to believe. I had been meditating for 20 years by then and couldn't imagine that someone whose films were utterly incomprehensible and even ugly at times could be diving into the same depths that are opened by TM. That changed when I saw Elephant Man. The depth of profundity of emotion and even the fine grained look of the film all combined to make it a very deep and lasting expression of a singular consciousness filled with joy and tragedy and deep humanity. I went back and saw his other films then and saw the same things through the varied telling and showing of different stories.
Even more impressive is his passion to alleviate suffering and the compassion that drives him to do so by opening as many avenues to advance TH instruction for those most vulnerable.
This was a delightful book. No fluff.
