Review: Since being diagnosed with hemochromatosis a few months ago, I have not felt physically ill, but I have been on an emotional roller coaster. The reason is that this disease, though common is hereditary, and the body turns against those who suffer from it. Those who have this disease absorb too much iron, which can affect the liver and other vital organs.There is also a lot of contradictory information on the Internet, and if you're hoping to get straight answers from your doctor, I wish you luck. I don't think there are many doctors who are experts on this disease.

The treatment for this illness is phlebotomy, removing a pint of blood periodically to bring iron levels to the normal range. While effective, this treatment can deplete the body of other necessary nutrients. Therefore it is important to maintain a balanced diet while avoiding foods high in iron.

Living Well With Hemochromatosis has helped me sift through all the contradictions. It has also given me factual information about how to determine where I am personally with regard to what is normal iron stores. It also gives guidelines for a diet and supplements that inhibit iron absorption. It is written for the lay person, but refers to studies that substantiate the information in the book. A very worthwhile purchase.

Review: This book on Hemochromatosis was EXACTLY what I was looking for and if you are like me who has searched the web for information, this is right for you, too. I appreciate the background medical information on hemochromatosis, and it cleared up why doctors have a hard time diagnosing this condition, but that's not really the important thing. The important thing was this nutritionist's take on the perfect hemochromatosis diet.

First of all, we all know you should cut down on iron rich foods in the diet, but I didn't know there was a list of foods or supplements you could eat that would slow, block or interfere with iron absorption. Usually I've just been given listed of iron rich foods and told to be careful about those. There are even foods/supplements that will help pull excess iron out of body tissues because of their ingredients. I did not know this as well because government sources only talk about diet, and never about supplements or helping yourself through natural methods. Government literature is too much controlled by the pharmaceutical industry for that the of useful information, so finally we have practical advice on what to do since you have the condition.

As to diet rules, the author made it really simple. He's turned me into a tea drinker. I take my vitamin C separately from meals, and my fruit servings are less than two per day for the reasons he mentioned (other books don't explain this). I don't try to cut out iron completely from the diet, and risk anemia or other conditions. I take calcium and fiber with meals when it will be iron rich because of red meats and seafood. There are a lot of rules I learned and they're all amply documented.

The ABSOLUTE BEST information was a list of supplements that will protect my liver, pancreas, heart, and brain ... since these are usually damaged by hemochromatosis ... and which do double duty by chelating excess iron or interfering with "harmful" iron metabolism inside me. I don't want to risk damage to my internal organs, especially my liver and heart since that runs in the family, so this list of supplements will come in handy. No other book, government literature, website or other source gave me this information, so get the book for this.

In other words, no other source gives me supplements that will help me protect my internal organs, so thanks go to Catalase's nutritional background. Two thumbs up or 5 stars, because this will definitely help you mange your hemochromatosis, and you can read it in one sitting. It has all the reference information you usually need, but the most important thing is what to do in everyday life, and that comes down to the diet and supplements which is the author's nutritional expertise.

Review: I've struggled all my life with hemochromatosis, consider myself a pretty good internet searcher, and always found a dearth of information available about it. This book is really a godsend. It has a ton of information that is new to me -- information that is available due to new research. It's a tremendous asset to my understanding, reassuring, informative, and practical. I'd recommend it to anyone who has or cares for anyone with hemochomatosis!
