Title: Not Enough Meat on the Bones

Review: When I read a book written by a doctor, I expect some depth on a subject, and to learn a few things I already did not know from doing my own research. I picked up a few new things, maybe to make it worth $2 of the $4.99 I paid for the Kindle book, but this book seems to be a marketing tool more than a thorough discussion of the subject and treatment of the condition. The doctor is transparent about his financial interests, but this type of book is written to drive traffic to his website, where you will get a few things for free and likely spend some money on products and consultations. I was not helped much from this book at all, though I did encounter information I'd already found on my own.

In this short book, we meet his case study, the "Osteo Women" (He spelled it "women", rather than the singular "woman"). She is a sad, defeated creature who surrenders to him and asks him to do what he has to do and to work his magic. So much for patient empowerment. Apparently all of the women he meets with osteoporosis are "tired, frail and beat" because that is how he describes his women patients.

The treatment plan for his patient is basically hormone replacement and vitamin therapy. However, it is not clear from the text whether hormone replacement is applicable at all to women who are not within the "ten year window" for using the primary hormone: bio-identical estradiol. Does this also apply to the use of progesterone and testosterone? In other words, is hormone treatment only appropriate for post-menopausal women within the 10 year window and pre-menopausal women who also can suffer secondary osteoporosis from various causes? Most of us who suffer primary osteoporosis are well beyond the 10 year window after menopause. I do very much agree that younger women should try alternative approaches before bisphosphonates.

It is particularly annoying that the charts are not readable in the Kindle edition. He writes that the book is practically "free" but even for $4.99 I expect to be able to read the charts and graphs. He also mentions the role of exercise in treating osteoporosis, particularly yoga, weight training and the ever available walking. I do all three and don't feel frail though I have osteoporosis and am searching for alternatives to Reclast and Prolia. He does recommend Forteo in some cases, but that is a two year treatment, and primary osteoporosis is an ongoing problem. Is he suggesting that after two years of Forteo, a woman with primary osteoporosis won't have to switch to another therapy to avoid losing ground?

I would say, if you identify with sad women looking for doctors to do their magic and are within the 10 year window of menopause, you might like this book.

Review: This is a must read for any woman or her husband who has been diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis... preferably BEFORE taking any medicine recommended or prescribed.

It's a quick, easy, and entertaining read packed with critical information about underlying causes of these diseases.

Dr Purser provides a brief history of traditional American/western medicine's definitions of and treatments for these diseases as well as the pros and cons of these treatments. He gives a basic and easily understandable explanation of the nutritional causes of these diseases that are overlooked by the majority of western doctors. This book details in depth the nutritional and hormonal testing required to truly identify deficiencies and explains extremely well his nutritional and primarily natural-based treatment so that you can pursue with your doctor or on your own.

Aside: You could also consult with Dr Dan, even remotely in pretty sure, check out his website fort more information. And DEFINITELY check YouTube for his videos on osteoporosis. In one video he shows some charts that show the in depth lifecycle of two primary intra-cellular processes and how all these vitamins, minerals, and hormones play their integral parts in the processes.

Title: I really enjoyed Dr. Purser's book on osteoporosis

Review: I really enjoyed Dr. Purser's book on osteoporosis. I found it educational as well as entertaining, not dry like some medical books can be. Being a 59 year old woman with osteopenia I found it very helpful in knowing what medical tests to ask my family physician to run and what over the counter supplements I could take that would be very helpful. I found the chapter on dispelling old wives tales very interesting. I really appreciated knowing what foods to stay away from and I am encouraged to keep lifting weights as a way to build muscle to help increase my bone density. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interesting in this subject. It is a quick read and very informational.

Title: have to question some of this advice

Review: Ken's wife here - I bought and read this ebook today. I have to wonder about some of the advice given here. Interestingly Dr. Purser says not to use calcium carbonate because it is high in lead - yet the supplement he recommends has calcium carbonate!. I also wonder why he suggests maintaining an estradiol and testosterone level, through natural hormone therapy, at the levels that a 20 year old would have. At 52 some how that doesn't ring as good advice. Some of the information was helpful, and at least it has given me more to research so that I will be more informed on the topic of osteoporosis.

Review: Dr Purser is an authority when it comes to natural ways to keep yourself healthy or to address conditions in the body you want to correct. He is knowledgeable but writes in a style that the layperson can understand and relate to. I highly recommend reading anything Dr. Purser has published as you will learn a great deal about your endocrine system and how to keep healthy without having to take dangerous drugs that have side affects!
