Review: "John the Baptist: A Biography" is a treasure. It offers fresh, practical, and deep insights into the person, life, and teachings of John the Baptist. By reading it, I learned a tremendous amount about the Baptizer, his ministry, and his close connections to Jesus of Nazareth.

The author, Mr. Charles Croll, has solid credentials, including a strong theological academic background. Apparently, Croll dedicated two sabbaticals and about twenty years to the study of the Baptizer. He draws on that background, including two trips to the Holy Land to view the relevant historical sites, in delivering a stellar biography of an incredibly important but overlooked historical figure.

Croll shows clear command of relevant secondary literature regarding the life and times of John the Baptist, and both main text of his book and the end notes were quite instructive. The book contains insightful pictures, charts, and maps. Importantly, the author's examination of John reflects a high view of the Scriptures. The author carefully covers all of the pertinent passages from the Bible regarding John and his life's mission. Although this book is a biography, it does include some pastoral insights that readers should benefit from. A definite plus is the author's appreciation for theological principles and insights, as the book helps explain concepts such as repentance and baptism (immersion) as taught by John. Along the way, Croll dismantles myths and misperceptions about John produced by artist renderings and by deconstructionist higher critic types. By reading this book, the reader not only learns more about John the Baptist; he or she also learns more about Jesus Christ.

This was my favorite book to read during the summer of 2020. I highly recommend this wonderful new biography of John the Baptist -- "the Prophet of Pentecost."
