REV. OTU COLLABORATES WITH PINK AFRICA TO FLAG OFF BREAST CANCER AWARENESS WALK

The first lady of Cross River State, Rev. Mrs Eyoanwan Bassey Otu has partnered with Pink Africa, a renowned non-profit organization focused on breast cancer advocacy for the purpose of bringing to attention this critical issue and galvanise community involvement in the fight against breast cancer.

Speaking at the event, Rev. Mrs Otu, represented by her Senior Special Adviser on Administration, Dr Comfort Oko, said, “Breast cancer is a formidable opponent that knows no boundaries. It affects women, men, and families across the globe, regardless of age, race, or social status. It is a disease that not only impacts the physical well-being of the individuals but also disrupts their entire lives and has a profound effect on their loved ones.”

“Today, as we walk together, we are making a powerful statement. We are saying that breast cancer will not intimidate us, it will not define us, and it will not defeat us. We march with determination and hope, knowing that together we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease.”

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Youth development, Odum Ukam (esq) highlighted the importance of early detection as key to increased survival rates, and charged every young person to be deliberate about their health.

The President of Pink Africa Dr Nchewi Ani, represented by the Pink Africa Health Club Coordinator, Mr Paolo Ogbeche, also speaking said, “As we embark on a renewed journey of hope, let us remember that put mission is not just about statistics or medical breakthroughs, it is about lives, our mothers, sisters, daughters, sons and friends. It is about ensuring that the dreams and aspirations of our loved ones are not cut short by the monster called cancer.”

The event, which started with a walk from Millennium Park to Calabar Municipality, featured a flag-off ceremony by Rev. Otu, remarks by implementing partners, an interactive session on self examination by medical experts, and screening of participants for breast, cervical, and prostrate cancer.

Highlights of the event were dance presentations by “Team Borderless”, and live illustration of self examination for breast cancer.
