Title: A little bit of everything

Review: I love mysteries and magic is ok too. I thought Ghosts would be just the book to keep me engaged on a cold winter night. Instead, what I encountered was a hodgepodge of a story that skips around in time, introduces -- and devotes a lot of space to -- characters who are only tangential to the narrative and should have been relegated to the "back story" section, useful for the author but not meant for public consumption.

Let me illustrate what I mean. The prologue is set in 1854, featuring a man named Cassius, and the theme of Irish mysticism appears. As the book opens, we're introduced to an aspiring NYC artist, Adair, in the current time, which happens to be 2010. There's a big section devoted to Adair's life as a temp/photographer, with a lengthy section about a client encounter and a reference to Adair's friend who disappeared at age 12, fifteen years earlier. Then a chapter with Cassius, another with an 11-year-old Adair, a chapter with a new character set in 1878, and then we're back to modern-day Adair before heading to 1911 and two new girls. By this time we've sorted out Adair's connection to these peripheral characters and learned about her not-quite-a-secret secret, which both does and doesn't have anything to do with the missing girl.

The book settles down shortly after page 100, at which point the reader may be best advised to forget about the first 100 pages and take it from there.

Part Irish folklore, part romance, part mystery, part small town gossip (everyone knows everyone's business) with a little bit of family dysfunction thrown in just for fun, Ghosts of the Missing touches on a lot of themes, none of them thoroughly or evocatively. When I finally hit the last page, I couldn't figure out what I had just read, so I started over, hoping those early chapters would make more sense. And they did, somewhat, but I still couldn't understand why the author devoted so much time to them.

By next week, I will probably have forgotten everything about this book, and that's fine. I didn't hate it, but I also could not recommend it.

Title: MUCH More Than A Ghost Story!

Review: It’s right here in the title! “Ghosts of the Missing”, by Kathleen Donohoe, is a ghost story. BUT it's also MUCH more; it's a missing girl mystery, a story of friendships,  a love story,  and an HIV AIDS historical novel.

 Donohoe is a spell-binding storyteller! I was immediately engrossed; this is a perfect book for a cold winter’s day in a favorite comfy-chair by a fire. It’s propulsive, atmospheric, mysterious, lyrical, and thoroughly satisfying. 

Cassius Moye was a young man who may have seen a ghost and who, after returning from fighting in the American Civil War, wrote a story about that ghost. Eventually his home became a writer's retreat called Moye House. Adair McCrohan, a young woman, an artist, an orphan, grew up in Moye House. Adair's best friend Rowan disappeared 1995, when they were twelve years old. Fifteen years after Rowan's disappearance, Ciaran Riordan, a writer from Ireland, wants to interview Adair about Rowan. Those are the bare bones of a story that is very rich and complex. Through Donohoe's detailed and beautiful descriptions, Moye House is a character itself, the way Hill House, Manderley, and Thornfield are. Treat yourself to this lovely "ghost" story!

Title: A complex story of the living after a tragedy

Review: I was thrilled to read "Ghosts of the Missing" after falling in love with author Donohue's stunning Irish family saga, "Ashes of Fiery Weather." I went into Ghosts craving more of that same vibe. I soon realized that this would be a different journey than Ashes.

You need the setting, the history, the family tree so the initial chapters are key and they move slower than the rest of the book. It did take me a few chapters to get connected with the story, the characters, the journey. Ghosts goes back and forth in time in a purposeful way that connects the story chapter by chapter. By the end, I was re-reading the beginning and second guessing how I had initially interpreted those chapters.

After the first few chapters I was joyously HOOKED. While there is a central theme regarding a girl gone missing weaved throughout the novel it almost took the backstory for me. Don't get me wrong, this young girl's story is intriguing and along with the many characters in the book, I too was on a mission to find out what happened. It's also a story of others who have gone missing though death or abandonment. This is the story of the living, those who remain behind to grieve.

The central character, Adair, is layered and complex. It is a story of her missing childhood as well, being an outcast, and perseverance. It is a story of friendships and heartbreaks.

Donohue writes beautifully, her prose is Ghosts is similar to Ashes and many times broke my heart with a single sentence. As with Ashes, you cannot skip a single line when you read this book or you can miss an impactful moment or flutter of feeling.

Also rather timely is the AIDs storyline, although not an AIDS story - it makes up a critical component of a character. It is central to understanding certain character's choices and impact on other characters. It is also a tragic and timely reminder in today's world how we treated our fellow human beings and let fear take the wheel. I was there for the AIDS crisis and it doesn't feel that different from many crises we are facing in our political word today. We should allow the ghosts of our past haunt us a bit and remember our mistakes so not be doomed to repeat them.
