Title: Most Practical Book on Improving Management Skills

Review: I wish Deb Cohen's book had been available years ago. As a leader I have searched for effective training or education on how to be a manager for several of my teams. You would think the tools or workshops are readily available but they are not. Too often, human resources leaders want to train on leadership, which is all about strategy and change management, getting to know the personalities of your team members etc. All that is well and good, but solid management skills are too often lacking in those who are purportedly managing. By management skills I mean the ability to handle the day-to-day work of managing others. How do you coach or mentor an employee? How do you set expectations? How do you have hard conversations? How do you assess your own ability to manage yourself as well as others? How do you learn these skills? Deb Cohen's book is a competency-based approach to self-assessing and then developing your own learning plan and process. You can't teach someone to be a manager in a half-day workshop. It takes self-reflection, honest feedback from others, practicing, and finding others who will be part of your extended network to help you continue to learn and grow. With self-guided assessments, practice examples, chapters on topics rarely discussed by other authors but oh-so-important (the art of questioning, for example), this is a gem of a book. Highly recommend.

Review: Deb Cohen’s book, Developing Managerial Proficiency: A Self-Directed Learning Approach, is a gem for emerging leaders who are motivated to develop their behavioral competencies. The book is a toolkit for learning agility or one’s capacity to quickly develop effective managerial behavior and apply it. In today’s world of work, where people own their career(s) and life-long learning is an imperative, Deb Cohen provides a toolkit (with self-assessments, multiple worksheets, and a detailed case illustration) for perfecting the art of networking, role playing, questioning, observation and journaling—all key ingredients in developing a growth mindset. Learning agility requires a self-directed approach in terms of knowing one strengths, actively seeking feedback, and developing those managerial competencies critical for career success. While the book does not hone in on any specific competency—although it lists 50 important management competencies, the self-directed learning approach can be applied to improve anyone of them. Title: Effective and Easy-to-Use Competency Development Approach!

Review: All of us can benefit from life-long learning through Dr. Cohen’s self-directed approach for developing behavioral-based management competencies. As I transition into a new career, the author’s approach challenged me to honestly evaluate my current proficiency and apply a 6-step process for developing competencies that have the highest potential benefit for my professional and personal life. For example, I had not considered formalizing my networking method (Chapter 5) or employing specific questioning strategies (Chapter 7) to build my management proficiency. The book’s self-assessments, worksheets, explanations, examples, tables and case study are excellent, easy to execute and will help you jump-start your self-directed learning journey.
