The India Women vs Sri Lanka Women Women’s Asia Cup 2026 final was not only about the continental title. Ahead of the much-anticipated clash in Dubai, another major talking point had emerged around the trophy presentation and the possible involvement of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi.

Naqvi, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board and Pakistan’s interior minister, was expected to attend the closing ceremony and present the Women’s Asia Cup trophy to the winners. His possible presence created considerable attention because of the controversy surrounding last year’s men’s Asia Cup final.

Why Mohsin Naqvi’s Presence Became A Talking Point

According to reports before the final, Mohsin Naqvi was scheduled to attend the Women’s Asia Cup final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 13. As ACC president, he was expected to be involved in the trophy presentation ceremony after the conclusion of the match.

The situation immediately reminded cricket fans of the 2025 Men’s Asia Cup final. India defeated Pakistan in that match but did not accept the trophy from Naqvi. The presentation was delayed, and India eventually celebrated their championship without receiving the silverware from the ACC chief.

That history made the IND W vs SL W Women’s Asia Cup final particularly interesting, especially if Harmanpreet Kaur’s team managed to lift the title.

Would India Accept The Trophy From Naqvi?

Before the final, there was no official confirmation from the Indian team about whether the players would accept the trophy from Naqvi if they defeated Sri Lanka.

Reports suggested that the decision could potentially lead to another unusual trophy presentation. India had already shown their stance during the men’s tournament in 2025, but the women’s team had not publicly announced how they would respond to a similar situation.

The focus, however, remained on the cricket. India entered the knockout stages unbeaten and were among the strongest contenders for the Women’s Asia Cup title.

India And Sri Lanka Fight For The Asia Cup Crown

The India Women vs Sri Lanka Women final was a repeat of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup final, when Sri Lanka defeated India to win their first title.

India were aiming to regain the trophy, while Sri Lanka were looking to defend their continental crown. With the championship at stake, the players and supporters were primarily focused on what would happen on the field.

The trophy presentation was expected to take place immediately after the final, meaning Naqvi’s presence added another layer of interest to an already high-profile encounter.

What Actually Happened After The Final?

India eventually defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs to win the Women’s Asia Cup for a record eighth time. India posted 183/5 before bowling Sri Lanka out for 111, with Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana starring with the bat and Sree Charani taking four wickets.

However, the expected trophy presentation involving Mohsin Naqvi did not take place as anticipated. The Indian team declined to accept the trophy from Naqvi and did not participate in the traditional trophy presentation ceremony. BCCI officials later indicated that the decision had been considered in advance.

The development once again brought the sporting achievement and cricket administration into the spotlight. Despite the controversy, India secured their eighth Women’s Asia Cup title and completed a memorable campaign in Dubai.
