Royal Carriage Bandra: Transforming a Real Railway Coach into a One-of-a-Kind Restaurant

Some restaurants impress with their food, while others become memorable because of the experience they create. Royal Carriage Bandra belongs to the second category. Designed and executed by Focus Design Studio, this project transformed a real retired railway coach into a fully functional restaurant without losing the charm and identity of the original structure.

As an experienced interior designer in Mumbai, we believe every commercial space should have a unique story. For Royal Carriage Bandra, that story began with preserving the authenticity of a railway coach while creating a comfortable and visually striking dining destination.

Preserving the Identity of the Railway Coach

Instead of treating the coach as just another structure, our design approach focused on retaining what made it special.

The original form, windows, proportions, and entrance were preserved to ensure guests instantly recognise that they are stepping inside a genuine railway carriage. The exterior was finished in a rich royal red colour, enhanced with intricate gold-inspired artwork that gives the coach a premium yet timeless appearance.

The platform-style entry further strengthens the concept, making visitors feel as though they are about to begin a memorable journey rather than simply entering a restaurant.

Designing an Inviting Interior Within a Fixed Structure

Working inside a railway coach is completely different from designing a conventional restaurant. The available width, ceiling profile, window placement, and circulation path are already defined, leaving very little flexibility for structural changes.

Instead of working against these limitations, we designed around them.

Comfortable booth seating was placed along both sides of the coach, naturally following the linear layout while maintaining a clear central aisle for smooth movement. This arrangement allows guests to enjoy privacy without making the space feel enclosed.

The interiors combine deep red wall panels, soft green upholstered seating, decorative floral ceiling artwork, warm lighting, patterned flooring, and elegant detailing to create an atmosphere that feels sophisticated, welcoming, and true to the character of the coach.

This project reflects our approach to restaurant interior design Mumbai creating interiors that are visually distinctive while respecting the original architecture.

Balancing Heritage with Modern Functionality

A restaurant must do much more than look beautiful.

Since this was an actual railway coach, every modern service had to be carefully integrated into the existing structure. Air conditioning, lighting, electrical systems, and operational requirements were planned in a way that maintained the coach’s original appearance while ensuring a comfortable dining experience.

Every design decision balanced aesthetics with functionality, allowing the restaurant to operate efficiently without compromising the authenticity of the space.

A Restaurant Designed Around Experience

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was creating an environment that feels immersive from the moment guests arrive.

The preserved railway windows, continuous central aisle, thoughtfully designed booth seating, decorative ceiling, and warm lighting work together to create an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and contemporary. Rather than relying on themed décor alone, the restaurant delivers an authentic experience because the space itself is a real railway coach.

Projects like Royal Carriage Bandra demonstrate how thoughtful design can transform unconventional spaces into memorable hospitality destinations.
