
Telegram users on Monday discovered a major outage. Every shortlink beginning with “t.me” had vanished from the internet. This disruption affected group invitations, profile sharing, and channel links. Nearly a billion people could not access key platform features.
The outage did not stem from a technical failure. It resulted from an unexpected consequence of a US government effort. Officials aimed to disrupt a cybercriminal proxy network.
On July 13, the US Treasury Department acted. Its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed sanctions on administrators of First VPN Service (1VPNS). The goal was to disrupt infrastructure used by ransomware groups. First VPN had promoted itself as offering complete anonymity. This claim drew the attention of law enforcement agencies.
As part of these sanctions, the Treasury released a list of related web addresses. Among them was a link to First VPN’s public support channel on Telegram.
Domain registrars must follow international regulations. Identity Digital oversees technical operations for the .me domain. It confirmed that the t.me domain was blocked following a request from OFAC.
Registries cannot selectively turn off a specific channel path. Consequently, the Montenegro-based registry Domain.Me applied a “serverHold” status to Telegram’s entire t.me domain. This action effectively erased it from the global Domain Name System (DNS).
The core messaging app continued to function smoothly. However, the platform’s shortlinks went entirely dark.
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was not initially aware of the domain hold. He publicly requested that the registrar look into the issue.
After the sanctions issue was identified, Telegram removed the channels in question. The registry operator confirmed compliance and restored access to the t.me domain.
“A Telegram channel using the t.me domain was among 1VPNS identified infrastructure,” Domain.Me confirmed. It added that normal service resumed after Telegram removed the affiliations.
This incident highlights a significant vulnerability in internet management. The suspension of a single sanctioned URL was enough to disrupt a vital communication tool. Millions of users worldwide felt the impact.
The t.me domain outage serves as a cautionary tale. It shows how complex regulatory actions can trigger unintended consequences. A single enforcement step against one channel affected an entire platform.
Telegram users rely heavily on t.me links for daily communication. These shortlinks power business operations, community building, and news distribution. Their sudden disappearance created confusion and frustration.
The swift resolution came after Telegram cooperated with authorities. The platform removed the offending channels promptly. This cooperation allowed the registry to lift the serverHold status.
