We often say the idea of losing ourselves to someone else is "romantic." We've been taught and believed that passion should be all-consuming, a fire that burns everything else away. But there is a vital and very distinct thing we all need to understand. "Love is a light that illuminates your life; obsession is a fog that obscures it."

The Nature of True Love
True love is a bridge that connects individuals together, while allowing them to be whole. True love speaks only positive words like, "I want the best for you, even if it doesn't always involve me."
It allows you to breathe, expand, and be at peace. It builds and encourages you to pursue your dreams, maintain your friendships, and love yourself more. It shows respect for your dreams, career, and freedom.

The Shadow of Obsession

Obsession, however, acts as a cage. It masquerades as "deep care," but its true engine is fear, the fear of loss, the fear of inadequacy, or the need for control.

Obsession says, "I cannot exist without you, and you must not exist without me."
It is suffocation, anxiety, and a constant thirst that can’t be quenched.
It isolates you, turns your hobbies into chores, and replaces your identity with a singular, frantic focus on another person.

Finding the Balance

If you find yourself crossing that line, stop and breathe. Realize that you cannot truly love another person if you have abandoned yourself in the process. Passion is beautiful, but it requires boundaries to stay healthy.

To love well is to hold on with an open hand. It is the bravery to let someone be their own person, trusting that what is meant for you will stay. Don’t settle for a connection that shrinks your world. Seek the kind of love that makes the world feel wider, brighter, and more full of possibility.

Choose the connection that gives you peace, not the one that consumes you.
