With the Niger Delta Sports Festival Trials just around the corner, the Akwa Ibom State Liaison Committee today held a crucial meeting to finalize plans for the state screening/elimination, starting Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

Led by Chairman and Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, the committee is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a successful event.

As Elder Bassey emphasized:

"We must ensure we have the best of preparation for our athletes, and screen according to the rules. Only athletes who merit to represent the state must emerge."

He also stressed the importance of collaboration with the Main Organizing Committee (MOC) to ensure a memorable hosting of the festival.

"Ultimately, we also have a huge task of ensuring we collaborate with the MOC to ensure a memorable hosting of this Festival. We have a charge by the Governor for everyone to put their hands on deck so Akwa Ibomites in general can be proud of the quality of contigent we put forward."

Other members of the committee present at Sunday's meeting held at the VIP lounge of the Godswill Akpabio Stadium included - Lady Rose Nsa Bassey (Perm. Sec/Vice Chairman), Mrs Inyang Uwah (Secretary/Welfare), Kufre Etukudo (Facilities), George I. Essien (Media/Scouting), Coach Daniel Umoette (Technical), Catherine Ekuta (Technical), James James (Accreditation) and Janet Bassey (Medical).

As part of preparations, the committee visited the Uyo Township Stadium today, to inspect the facilities, including the swimming pool, dressing rooms, lighting, and extra fencing around critical areas.

The committee will also play host to the Main Organizing Committee of the Festival on Monday, for another tour of facilities and a meeting to discuss crucial issues related to the event.

The Niger Delta Sports Festival Trials will take place from March 11th to 23rd, 2025, while the Festival runs from April 1-8, across various centers in Akwa Ibom State. Over 3,000 athletes are expected to participate in 17 select sports, making this a landmark event for the region.

With the committee's focus on thorough preparation and collaboration, Akwa Ibom is poised to host a successful and memorable Niger Delta Sports Festival.
